hi all was wondering if u can help me. I currently work  a four on four of shift at moment and have got some windows to clean on my days off. i doing traditional at moment but need to know how i go on about tax and liability insurance etc and need some advice. many thanks clunk

Hey mate

For public liability insurance, have a look at www.insuredrisks.co.uk, they seem to do pretty good deals. Some commercial vehicle insurance policies can include public liability cover too, so if youre insuring a van you could save some money that way.

As regards tax, youll need to register as self employed (if you havent already done so) here... http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/iwtregister-as-self-employed.shtml

Keep records of all the money you take, and also receipts for your gear, new rubbers, soap, squeegees etc..... petrol/diesel, and any other costs that you run up in the course of your work. The revenue will send you a tax return at the end of your first tax year.

Hi Mate,

1. Liability Insurance.
    You need Public Liability. Covers you if you injure someone and they sue you!!!
Doesn't cover for breaking a window as the excess is around £250

2. Tax etc
Go see a reputable Accountant. 
Keep records of your earnings; Income figures, receipts for any purchases for the business. 
As you already have a main job you'll probably have to pay 23% (Basic Rate) of your profit in tax so I would put 25% of your profits on one side.
You may be able to alter your tax code on your main job to account for the earnings on Self Employment therefore paying your extra tax PAYE on your main job.  See an Accountant they will put you right.

Public liability as far as I am aware you dont have to have by law for window cleaning (not that in anyway would I reccomend not getting it)

Call inland revenue and they will give you the facts you have a few months to register as self employed (again as far as I am aware.

I use simplybusiness for empolyers and public liability insurance.

My advice is speak to the correct people about this part of your business so that way you get the correct information.

Good tip for ya is this
Get a couple of folders A4 size perfect from tesco stationary WH Smith all them type places
Buy some cheap envolopes and put the month on the fromt of each

All petrol, Work related reciepts put in envolope with say January on it and pop into big A4 folder by april you should have 3 months worth with all your reciepts and save yourselve a right balarva in sorting then out at end of year financial.
 Also make a note on front of envolope start milage and end milage as that will help you too
