Worst Clean Ever
« on: November 23, 2004, 10:25:51 pm »
I cleaned a Laura Ashley couch today. 43% cotton  43% rayon  14% nylon.
18 months old but extremely soiled.. it should be red but arms and seat cushions nearly black.  and a lot of biulding work has taken place in the house.

Used No2 withfresh water rinse wich took out the worst of the soiling but some dark areas and rings remained tried no3 and eco still no joy.

as it dried it looked worse and worse... fortunately I had pre qualified the expected results. But I expected to get a much better result than I did.

I then tried stain pro  on all marks with slightly acidic rinse but still no joy

After 3hrs on 1 couch I had to admitt defeat

Any ideas

Thanks Phil

Hi Phil

Make sure you have a waterproof drop sheet. As you have done already, but after pre-conditioning, instead of agitating with your normal brush/pad/cloth, use a sponge and a bucket of mixed Fibre Shampoo/Oxibright/Fibre Buff. Use only the foam and agitate well with your sponge. Rinse in normal way with an acid rinse. Towel and dry. There is an extra stage (The Derek Bolton Rinse ;) ) you can go through, but I'd be tempted to leave it at this for now. If any foam is accidentally spilt onto the carpet, rinse off or you may have a lightened spot. Don't wear cotton trousers/pullover or you may have faded patches :o

Safe and happy cleaning :)

Hi With mixed fibres including cotton I seem to get good results with prespraying with chemspec heavy duty soil lifter than MS No2 followed with plain water rinse.
All the best

Hi David,

Chemspec HDSL is one of my favourite products.

However, if you find your micro-splitter needs an additional boost on  greasy areas, try a very light misting of Eco Spotter before the M-S ( Solution No. 4 or One-Step Fineline being more suitable where natural fibres are involved). One agitation will do for both products.

By adhering to micro-splitters you avoid the situation where some of the micro-splitting action is taken up by breaking down the other product, which it will treat in the same way as any other contaminant, such as the soil.

I am sure that both Nick and Steve would confirm this.

What are the mixture ratios for firbrebuff, oxibrite and fibre shampoo?

Thanks guys

John would you use eco before No2 or no4?

Is an oxydising bleach ok on a dark fabric?

I have got to go back tonight as I left my fleece there, not looking forward to it, but at least I will get to what its like now it is completely dry.

Phil,

I normally apply Eco Spotter immediately before No. 4. The reasoning is that the alcohol content assists the main M-S in fully contacting the soil.

Oxidising bleach always has the potential to affect colours, but mixed correctly, and used as Ken described the dwell time allowed for the oxidising mix should not result in much  bleaching. The main function of the oxygen bubbles formed is micro-agitation.

An exception would be, for example, those dark flat-weave cotton suites where colour has already abraded off at main contact points.

The method Ken has so eloquently described should not affect the fabric dyes...
he wisely left out the rinse step in this instance as this may have caused a very slight change.

I came up with this method some years ago for the Scotchcare network to solve a problem one of the franchises were having with fabrics being bleached...it worked.

Revisited today..

Arms of couch dried out better than I anticipated but seat cushions not so good.

Now customer tells me the marks are probably blackcurrent!!!

I have offered to try again armed with new info and waiting for instructions from customer.

The clean bits have faded slightly but this was pre qualified.

Thanks for your help

Phil
