Rob, I am in Portsmouth. I have a set of roof bars that are suitable for vehicles with the gutters along the side of the roof. If your car has those, then you are welcome to use them until you get your van.

Keep going with the canvassing. Try the late afternoon / early evening and Saturdays. You may get a better response then.
Do all the good you can, and make as little fuss about it as possible.

Personally, I thimk the 2 weeks after Xmas for canvassing is a waste of time....my opinion only ;D...... why not leaflet like wotsit for the next 2 weeks and then start following up with door knocking after that. Keep at it you will get there, but this year will probably be a tougher one than most ;)

Roof racks, have you any scrap cars dealers/yards near you....could always adapt a close match, that would see you through until you get a new van...try asking local garage mechanics you never just know what they may have in their back yard ;D

Look on e-bay

Plenty of good inexpensive ones there.
