I have just moved from a house with no water meter to one with a meter and would like to swop over to using DI only. My TDS is about 38-40 and I use about 250 litres a day. I have seen both 4.5lt and 11lt DI vessels available but I have no idea what is best for me. I would like to keep cost down to a minimum but need it to do the job.

Any advise?

personally i would go for a bigger vessel or you will be messing around changing
the resin on a regular basis. i think mines a 25 ltr only change the resin around
every three months maybe longer and my tds is similar to yours and i use around
the same amount of water

i use 2x 11 litre vessels, my tds is 34. When the tds level rises from 000 swap the vessels around and replace the resin in the forst vessel, this way you save resin and money. Luke

ps. Garry, with his tds and water usage he will be changing the resin every 2-3 months if hes full time, so keep to the small bottles, they are easier to fit in!

What you need is 2 x 11Ltr DI vessels, have them in the van & pump through them from tank. This way you can fill tank with tap water at full pressure ( a lot quicker ) & hey presto- pure water on demand. Also, if your work is also in a soft water area you can top up from custy's outside tap if you run low on water (with permision of-course ).
By using 2 vessels in sequence with virgin resin & such a low tap tds your resin will last ages.

The size of di vessel won't make a difference to how long the resin lasts, and putting them in series makes the resin last longer, Luke

The guy hasn't any listed at the moment,.. but send him a message and he'll sort you out. Re-conditioned, and in perfect working order, only £25 each!
Personally, I'd go for the biggest possible, just so the resin doesn't have to be changed so often,... but deffo use 2 vessels, your resin usage will be less than half that way.

gary, yes, two 11ltr vessels will last twice as long as a single 25 litre one in the long run, when the TDS starts to rise, you swap the last velles into first position, and refill the one in first position only, replacing it in the position last (furthest from the water source.) that way the resin isn't changed when the reading is only 005 or so,... you continue to use it in the first vessel until it is spent completely!

yes, as once 1 large DI vessel hits 001/002 tds then you have to throw all that lovely resin away to refill. resin that would now be pre-filtering a second DI vessel filled with fresh resin, so the fresh ( 2nd ) vessel is now being fed almost pure water ( this is the resin that would have had to be thrown away with just 1 DI vessel ).

So, although 1 large vessel would initially last longer at 000tds ( 'cos there's more resin in it ) once the tds does start to rise you have no choice but to sling it. This is why a twin DI system opperates much more efficient.

The blue ones are fiberglass, and the only real difference is size,.. they're big enough to put directly onto mains water, and will produce 1000's of litres of water before the resin needs changing.

Also, i was wondering how many litres do you get between fills?

I have tried to get some info about resin life and have drawn a blank.

I thought about filling a 1litre vessel and running water through it until it is totally spent and measuring how much TDS was removed. I would need a massive container though. Also, another problem is that I am thinking that the amount of TDS removed will be affected by the flow and pressure.

So, the questions I am wondering about:
How much TDS will a litre of resin remove?
  -Before the reading gets to 001
  -Before it is completely spent
How does pressure and flow affect a resin filter?
  -DOes more pressure mean better filtering? (I think yes)
  -Does more flow mean less filtering? (I think yes)

If I am right, then it is better to filter after the pump. (100psi and 10 lpm flow)
  -This is not good though because I would need 4 filters as I run 2 pumps. (2 for each pump)
If it makes no difference then it would be better to filter on the way in (30psi and 40lpm) and I only need the 2 filters.

What do you guys think?

The size of the vessel can make a difference, if you have a small di vessel and high pressure then your tds will jump up. Slow the pressure down then tds will drop.

A larger di vessel is better if you have high pressure water.

I knwo what you mean but this would be high pressure 100psi/60psi for most delivery pumps.

I am also wondering if the vessels can take this pressure. When you disconnect the pole the pressure will build up to 100psi. Will this crack the housing?

DI vessels are fine with wfp pumps, even at full throttle. what i mean above is high mains tap pressure. you can't blast water through a DI vessel ( high mains pressure ) it simply cannot purify it quick enough. compared to my mains pressure at home, my 75psi shurflo is a trickle, even at full pelt.
This is why it's quicker, easier & more convenient just to fill your tank with tap water & have the vessels in the van to pump through.
my tank is 400Ltr & it takes approx 15 mins at most to fill from tap. plus, if i get short on water while i'm out i just top up from custy's tap.

No, flow through a properly filled di vessel is free flowing, even with two of them. As you probably know, there is a wee bit of restriction when you fill a di vessel with fresh resin but after a good few litres it settles back to normal.

You may well get many flow problems with 100m of 6mm hose but none of them will be anything to do with di vessels.
