Hi All,

I've been asked by a local builder to do a buliders clean , on a house that they are repairing/ rebuilding after a house fire.

They have asked me to de-odourise the walls and floors and ceilings, to help get rid of the smoke smell.

Has anybody done this or point me in the right direction, with the method and chemicals and equipment needed.

Cheers Jon

I think you may need a fogging unit - go onto the carpet cleaning section and ask the same question.

The first part and most important of any deodourisation process is removal of the source. All the smoke residues need to be removed from EVERY surface. The best way to do this is to spray and wipe with a high alkaline detergent. This helps to neutralise the acidic residues. Use bales of terry towelling and discard each cloth as it becomes contaminated.
All voids need to be accessed as smoke will permeate every nook & cranny. Failure to do so can lead to lingering odours after the repairs, the last thing the owners want to smell is smoke when they move back in as it just brings the whole trauma right back to them.
Also behind sockets and light fittings need cleaning. During a fire you get a pressure build up and this forces the smoke even into hidden voids.
After the residues are removed give everything a good spray with a suitable deoduriser. Fogging can help at this stage but not totally nescessary if you don't have a fogger.
Charge well for a dirty and hard job 3-4k for a full semi.

Ultrapac renovate is the ideal solution for this type of job.
