It all depends on how much water you process.

You should never leave it longer than 6 months due to material degradation of the filters themselves.

If you use about 400 litres a day 5 days a week in an average water hardness area then I would recommend about every 3 months as Chris has said. If you use more then slightly more often or if you use a lot less then leave it for the maximum 6 months.

Many years ago I learned the hard way that if you leave it any longer you risk damaging your RO membranes and interrupting your work whilst the RO is out of action.

if using 650l a day 5 days a week on a 40" ro tds at 470+ how often would you change the pre filters ?

Every 2 months would give you guaranteed membrane protection.

 40" membranes are a lot more expensive than pre-filters!
