Censorship...question to mods
« on: November 22, 2007, 11:07:52 pm »

I write "F##K" and it's deleted

Someone else writes "c***" and it's left intact

Your censorship doesn't seem even handed....!

WHY?

Simon - just my thoughts as a non-moderating forum user.

There is a scale of words that folk generally find unacceptable.

F*** is usually high on the list.
C*** can be at the very top of the list or at the lower end depending upon whether you are using the word to describe someone as female genitalia or as excretia.

Hope this helps.

 ;D
It's a game of three halves!

There is a word censorship section in the admin section of every forum, and its down to admin to add the words they think should be censored, once the word is added it doesn't matter if its at the top of the list or right down the bottom, if its in the list then it will be censored.

Simon

Last month there were over 15,000 individual posts made on this forum and there are 10 moderators / administrators to oversee them! We don't see them all and we do rely on people uysing the report to moderator function. Often posts are left simply because they haven't been spotted but other times it's not clear if they're meant to be offensive or not. That's what makes moderation difficult.

It's very easy to misinterpret posts on a forum at the best of times. Your 'WHY?' in capital letters might seem a bit abrupt to some people and to others the fact that I think you're a ****** **** *** might seem questionable too!

Regards

Mike

Thanks for your clarification Mike, it's good to hear that the censorship is impartial.

A swear word of any kind should be deleted/edited, yes most of us use them but others will find offensive, same goes for religion, slander ect ect.

All the mods are doing is trying to make this a nice place to be for everyone.
So I say well done to them  ;)

Did you all see the new sticky in the "Non-cleaning" section about swearing???

Some words that are not even swear words are in this forums swear-filter. Below, I'll type the name of the town I live in,... lets see what happens:

A lot of words are automatically deleted. There is a word that can be correctly used to describe a male chicken, and also slang for a male sex organ. This word always appears as thyngy. If you try and write the word to describe a small white shellfish,
kockle, it appears as thyngle, unless you deliberately miss spell it as I just did. Dai

There is a vllage near Caernarfon called thingyawaern. I guy was asked to spell it to the lady taking his call. She hung up on him after he spelt the first 5 letters. Dai

mike there is a script you can add to your forum, i have it on mine, you select the words you think is inappropriate  , so that if a member posts a swear word it automaticly turns to jiberish  like this %*)%*%  this way you have no worries

As a moderator, anytime I see a swearword, whether it has lots of **** in it or is misspelt I will delete it, if you see one that is still in a thread it is because I have not spotted it.
Outside of the forum my language can be as blunt and Anglo Saxon as the next person....and frequently is.
On the forum though, use of such language simply isn't necessary, and it looks unprofessional.
Crap for instance or bloody are two words that I personally ignore, but if you have typed c*** then if it could be construed (in the context of the sentence) as the slang word for female genitalia I would delete it.
damn for instance is a word the auto censor won't allow, but that is American censorship for you, but it is one that in this country is considered hardly a swearword at all.
The auto censor on forums is often highly irritating,  the Americans are so PC it makes me want to gag >:(

I agree the Yanks are very PC considering guns can be legally carried. But out of interest why is CIU censored by America?
