HELP!!!! Wool Rug Twist
« on: November 12, 2007, 03:10:46 pm »
Hi all,

Ive Been looking on the forum for advice on how to clean a White long pile wool rug twist each twist is about 2 inces long and there thousands of them.

Ive been cleaning carpets for 3 month and this is the first wool rug twist Ive been asked to clean.
I'm terrified in case the twist on the pile becomes untwisted.

Can anyone suggest the best method for cleaning such a rug or should I just avoid cleaning this type of rug as Im quite inexperienced at this game. The rug is 13ft by 12ft if that makes any difference.

Regards  Newbie ???

What is obvious is that it will take days to dry if you wet clean it without a dryer on it afterwards. I would agitate with tampico brush if you are HWEing but if it's not too dirty you might want to try a dry option. Make sure you vac vac vac (in direfferent directions)

This type of rug isn't the easiest to clean for those who have been doing it a long time.  If this is your first rug I would suggest you get someone else to clean it for you.

Find someone who has a ringer or else as suggested it will take a very long time to dry.

A 13 x 12 is almost not cleanable on your own as when it is wet it will be very heavy to turn over and clean the other side.

Then to hang it will be awkward too if you haven't removed that much moisture.

Just my opinion but under no circumstances "should" you dry clean this type of rug.

Nor use a traditional type of vac on it.

Anyway, again, best advice is to either walk away totally or get someone who knows how to clean this type of rug properly.

Best, Dave.

P.S. How were you going to clean it?

I dont use a vac at all on an Oriental or area rug(s).

I was suggesting a traditional vac in my previous post as one with a beater bar, most vacs have the bar which on an Oriental is a no no.

For those houses with central vacs, these work very well because they rely on suction only.

If there are vacs out there which of course there are that just use suction then these can be used.

I use either a dusting machine or an air line to de-dust textiles before I clean them.

If you have the ability i.e the correct filters in place then a portable or truckmount will be better than what I am refering to as a traditional vac.

Best, Dave.

If you consider the pile length at 2" then avoiding an upright vacuum would be very sensible advice and I would recommend you do not attempt this job, as it's not viable " on site "

Don't know where you are based, but there are a couple of companies with the facilities to clean it, the only one I know personally, is Franklins of Sheffield, who've been cleaning rugs for over 100 years.

There are others, but I don't know their location.

Tony depending on level of soilage you could clean it if you hav time on your hands.

You could vac with any vac as long as you had a decent hand tool/brush, numatics do 2 good brushes that I know of.
After vaccing to death then mist with your prefered m/s, aggitate with a mild nylon brush and extract using a hand tool that has a flood jet, ie Prochem glide master hand tool.
As the other guys hav said drying may take several days.

Thanks Paul,

I really would love to have a go at this rug, but because this rug is so big and it probably cost an arm & a leg I really don't want to be forking out loads of money to replace it, so I think i will chicken out and wait until; say I get an identical rug to do but only perhaps a 3ft by 4ft which wouldnt cost so much to replace.

I will take your comments on board and appreciate your advice,  this forum is invaluable to newbies like me.

Again thanks for the advice.
