I buy 10 litre bags,.. and at the rate I'm going, it'll last me between 10 and 11 months. I only use it to polish after the RO though as my tap TDS is 300 odd!

but thats a whole other subject and we dont want to go there

I have thought about an RO , but when you way it all up that too can become expensive.

Decent 40/40 £400
holding tanks £90 for 2 ibc
booster pump £100
tansfer pump and hose £200
associated plumbing and electricity wiring etc £100
other filters/ softeners etc £50.

Then whatever repairs upgrades etc year on year.
At the moment i just fill straight into the van through di vessels. No worries at all, just need to change the resin about every 2 - 3 weeks.

For 650 litres a day you could use a RO-Man 300GPD unit no problem with a £20 recycled IBC.
Or alternatively, a merlin will produce more than that amount overnight,.. I'd just slap one in the back of the van and keep the DI cylinders as they are after it.
The waste from a merlin is a bit tragic,.. but even with the extra bit on a water bill it'd pay for itself in 4 - 5 months.

I pay about £80 a bag , thinking about it i probably use 900 litres a day, one van uses 600 and the other about 300.

I have been trying to find cheap storage and the best i could find is 2 ibc for £90

As for a 300 gpd ro, i have heard so many bad stories, mainly low water pressure not producing enough. My house has low water pressure and my garage is 100 feet away from the house so will probably encounter loads of problems and i am not ready for them yet.

My way is simple maybe a bit more costly, but if i lose even 1/2 a day due to not having water that would cost me dearly.

I have been thinking going down the RO route maybe one day, it is not just about the money, it is about time effort and reliability.

i dont want to be having to flush ro's every day and whatever else needs repairing etc, its bad enough stopping the leaks in the vans as well as air locks and the occassional dodgy wiring connector,I suppose with an ro set up theses problems would amplify at least two fold.

If you have low preasure water put a booster pump on.

I have a 300gpd & not had a prob in nearly 2 years. Water goes in at an avarage 0f 300ppm & always comes out 4-5ppm. I change the filters about every 6-9 months at a cost of £30.

You would be better off going down the 4040 RO route with a booster pump with 1 or 2 IBC storage tanks and a transfer pump. It would work out a lot cheaper than your DI costs even with a low TDS of say 100. You'd only have to change the pre filters every 3-months and the RO membrane every 2-3 years. It's worth considering.

Thanks for considering me last week for that work offer involving the 'Boots' chain locally but,  I only clean external windows with WFP because of my arthritus illness. I'm always happy to accept any new commercial or large domestic work so long as it doesn't involve internal cleaning using a squeegie.

Apart from anything else, if you are on a water meter and are using 900 litres a day you would need to get through at least another 900 litres a day as waste water.  I know water is dear in Cornwall - say about £2 per 900 litres for easy reckoning.  22 days per month worked = £44 per month = about £500 a year for extra water wasted by the RO.  So that's another £500 a year to deduct from your £1,800 a year resin bill.  Most of the items you listed are either permanent or only need renewing occasionally (less often than a year) but you are spending say a grand a year ands saving yourself loads of potential aggro.  Sounds reasonable to me.
