I have no problem with metabisulphite, but dry-cleaning fluid used to make me feel ill for a couple of days after using.  Also a well known brand of upholstery pre-spray made me queasy.

I no longer use either product, & feel much better as a result.

Ivor,

The off-gassing of sodium metabisulphite and sodium metabisulphate can cause severe irritation to eyes, mucous membranes and lungs, but if mixed with an acid the fumes can be toxic.

Another substance to avoid is butyl cellusolve, which was at one time a common ingredient of traffic lane cleaners - hopefully now removed from formulations.

It is strongly suspected as being carcinogenic, with particular association with testicular cancer.

Hi

A look at the suppliers technical data sheets will enlighten us as to the precautions we all should be taking with carpet/upholstery cleaning products in general.

They are quite illuminating to say the least... we carry them but do we read them?  :o

Apart from some of our cleaning solutions being maybe dangerous in one way or another, as individuals we may be sensitive to some. For myself, I'm sensitive to the vapours from Prochems Pre Spray Gold (bit it does smell pleasant). Fortunately, I'm not sensitive to DiHydrogen Oxide.

Safe and happy cleaning:)

SMBS as I kow it is serious stuff to play around with, used as a sterilizer for wine making etc,.
Listed as a respiritory aggrevant.
Never use in hot water but then in cold it's less effective working strength wise. Prochem multi pro gets coffee out usually so does the enzyme pre-spray. Enzymes are being banned soon, and so are powder delivery systems, and none too soon!!!!
