I'm upping the anti on my protector sales people like to spend more at Xmas, do any of you know what the price per metre is to apply the various protectors on the market?

I know there are a few different ones, craftex probably the cheapest but what about others?

Come on do the maths I think you may be surprised!

Shaun,

you lazy F$%ker. Flouroseal is about 62p a metre. Scotchgard is is v close bu just under. Don#t know what Chemspecs one is. I've just run out and have no bottle to add up but knowing them it's probably about £1.50. Iknow Allied Carpets charge about £4 per metre to have a carpet treated so you can easily overcharge on that.

I was trying to show the forum the real cost of protection when applied properly, the one I'm going to try at the moment will cost me to apply £1 a metre but it is the very best money can buy but I can't charge the same price as normal protector for it.

I know of a few cleaners that just add an imaginary figure on what they think will sell say £10 for a room but if a room is 16 sq metres you could be out of pocket.

If you have your Carpet Protected at Allied Carpets do you get a Guarantee

How many cleans will it stand.

Promite only lasts a Year

 I used to think it was 50p a metre but based on 8 sq metres per litre its around 75p

On some carpets you could get 10 metres per litre

But you may get Discount , pay Carriage or non recoverable VAT which all changes actual cost of purchase

Can you buy Guardsman these days I was told that lasts 3 cleans

when you sell protector doesnt it mean that the customer will expect not to have to have it cleaned as regularly and therefore you lose some income there?

ian - what do you mean by "will last 3 cleans" ?

Some protectors are only good for one year before they need doing again, or 1 clean.

Guardsman  off the top of my head would last 3 cleans before it needed to be reaplied.

I would need to go and check my books for exact figure.

Price is not the issue because if it costs more you charge more as it is a premium service.
As above posts mention you dont want lots of call backs so use one that works well for you and apply it correctly then charge accordingly.

Carpet shops sell it at £4 a metre although when you are buying carpet at say £30 a mtre it is a drop in the ocean, when the rep says your carpet will cost £1500 to supply, fit, new underlay and grippers then says "do you want to protect your new investment? and it will cost just another £120" well it's less than 10% of the original sale, now try cleaning a carpet at say £4 a metre and selling reprotection at £4 a metre it is harder.

Iprotect for 2 retailers and charge them a modest £1.50 mtr.Costs me 70p mtr for Solugard.One sells it on at £3.50mtr ,the other depends sometimes they just price my cost into the job.Not much I know but its easy work.

If you target the shops selling carpet for £80 a yard and upwards you can get £8 to £10 a yard to protect it.

Some carpets I work on are up to and incuding £1000 a yard.  No guessing what can be charged to protect and in the future to clean.

Mike Roper, although I dont think it is easy work i certainy understand your point.  My question to you though is....... At a profit of 80p a meter how can you cover all the running costs of your business for that specific effort.  More to the point, you must be way out of pocket if you then attend to service the clients you have protected.  If you protected 100m which isnt a bad size job you are making £80.   How is it worth it?

You can't buy Guardsman, its only for sale to Safeclean franchisee's.

Kev, I have nothing to do with Safeclean but still use Guardsmen on occasion.  It is supplied to me from "certain" companies to apply the protection for and on their behalf.  Guardsmen is also freely available in the states but I understand it might be something totally different but with the same name.  I didnt use it in the states so cant compare the two.

Although I think Ian was asking if it can be bought - which it can't in the UK. Of course there are retailers that use it as part of their contract with Guardsman (who are owned by Valspar) - who treat items themselves instore, and at custy's houses when required.

I'm sure if cc's deal with these retailers closely, then the possibility of using it on their behalf (or whether they acquire some to use) inceases slightly

I protect for the retailer in their warehouse which is 5 mins from me, carpet laid out ready to go, hence as I said easy money. I generally work within  15 miles of my home & deal with retailers selling carpet at 'normal' cost ,£  20 -£   50 mtr  , which I appreciate you are in a totally different arena & admire you for it. I honestly do think  my prices need to be raised as I am not a newcomer to this business so know the ropes (18yrs) but realise the retailer must make a good profit and the customer will only pay so much at the end of the day.
I am not tied into any call outs to thje end user for the protection I carry out for the retailers, or rather I dont  service them for free.
Again its down to you to decide on your circumstances and what it costs to deliver the service and what profit you receive at the end of the day.,
Wish I had more profit so maybe that says it all!

You used to be able to buy Guardsman  but my supplier disapaired.
My Cousin who had a Carpet Shop also had it in his garage.

Maybee it all happened when they took over Safeclean
When you protect for Carpet Shops to you give a guarantee.

Did I not read a lot of Chem drys work was stain removal is that for insurance companies or part of a retailers cover.

I know 3M used to give guaratees on upholstery but not  carpets as it was'ntrelikable enough.
