Special Offers
« on: October 16, 2007, 04:49:32 pm »
Hi

I went to Tesco & bought the bread knife a bottle of wine, I'd had a good week so that was £4.

Anyway a week later she had drunk it & i went to get her another one and it was now £6, but if I bought two I got one free. So its the same price if you buy 3.

Now i only do small rooms & £12 is a lot to me so she will have to go without.

The Supermarkets a superb at these kind of promotions.

they may well have some good buys,  :-\, but all they are doing is basicly tricking the public into a false sense of " a good buy"   Most , not all simply walk around a supermarket placing items in the trollys not realising what they are paying, this applies especially to fresh goods, meat, fruit veg, salads etc.

How many know the real price when an item like the humple swede is priced at 79p kilo, that makes an average sized swede  around 95p - £1 20p each   or leeks at £1 89 kilo   expensive  , compared to a local greengrocer selling at around half that price. yes , they have their offers , buy one get one free, etc, etc, which of course they advertise well......... leading the custy into thinking everything is cheaper, far from it.
Oh and those offers, do you really think they are giving them away ;D  ;D  ;D, No chance the grower is paying and losing everytime to the big boys. I have a close friend who used to supply the supermarkets with salads, he would set out a growing plan for these supermarkets, all goes well untill they say , next week we are having a promotion buy 1 celery get 1 free, and you are supply the free one , Yes, hard to believe but true, I hasten to add he no longer supplies them after all the dirty tricks they do.
another example, they got a potato supplier to invest over a million £ in production lines for potatoe supplies, 2 years later they went elswere leaving them in the lurch. I could give you numerous other examples, all they are are monopilies conning the public.
personaly I very very rarly step foot in the places.

would we all agree that Tesco know more about marketing than us, considering they have a massive marketing department.

so why do people say "special offers don't work"..... "don't reduce your prices"  etc..etc.. obviously they do work otherwise Tescos would do them!

But also regarding the two for the price of one deals, that sometimes comes from the supplier, as they believe that if you have two of theirs, that is better than buying one of the competitors, so it encourages brand loyalty in the end.

Not sure but I saw that on a programme once.

Mike, as usual I have to agree with what you are saying :)
but, a big but , supermarkets have a big advantage over the likes of us offering specials etc,
they have alot more to tempt the punter with , therfore an offer a special is simply getting them to pay infalted prices on other items.
What can we offer ?, apart from an add on or an extra carpet  :-\

I must admit if i go into Morrisons and there's someting I want that's a two for one, like a large pot of cream and I only want one I don't get any at all.

My reasoning is two is not what I want and the one is over priced. I then have to drive 2 miles down the road to get it elswhere. ::)

My wife hates paying the normal price once she has had something once at a discounted price.................. same reason that i do NOT make such offers with my carpet cleaning  ::)

My customers already get the best job possible at a fair price  ;)

you've got to remember that all these special offers and discounted prices require you to actually spend more money so when you use them in a carpet cleaning context you come out of the house with more money not less.

our biggest expense in time & money is getting to the customers home and setting up our equipment, if you have to make a round trip of 30miles then you need the maximum amount of money for your trouble if  you offer every extra room at a £15 discount ( or half price) then its all profit and will only take an extra 15mins each room.

the amount of extra work I've got just by saying if i have to come back to clean your stairs it will cost you £60 but if |I do them while I'm here now, WHILE I HAVE THE MACHINARY SET UP I can do them for £40.

The method we've employed over the last year, is to charge 1 area at normal full price and all extra areas at half price, and nearly every job we go to we end up doing more than one carpet.

People just love to hear the phrase 'half price', i even think it is better in some ways than saying 'Free' because most will think there is a catch somewhere, whereas with half price at least they think they are paying something but not the full amount ( if that makes any sense )  ;D

Any how our average job ticket is around £100 so we're gonna keep on doing the same  8)
