what carpet
« on: October 14, 2007, 02:55:36 pm »
Hi gang

Just a question as i'm not sure of the answer really....

What is the main 'point' about man-made fibre carpets as opposed to wool or wool-blend carpets?

I have 2 dogs and i never think of carpets as being the most hygenic things in the world, so i've only ever really bought cheap carpets which, to my surprise, have lasted very well for the price.

Anyway, my lounge carpet was actually taken from the house i moved out of - i'd bought 100% polypropolyne loop-pile at £3.99 a sqyd from Carpetright. It was down for about 4 months (whilst the house sale was going through) and has now been in this lounge for 3 years. I was ready to rip it out as i thought being a cheap carpet and not of any natural fibre it was probably not a very good carpet. However, a carpet cleaner who cleaned it for me (who said it wasnt actually very dirty, apparently) said that these looped polypropolyne jobbies are very 'forgiving' and that my carpet was actually in good shape.

So what should i buy next time? I wont be spending a lot of money, and i prefer cut-pile to looped, but its all this business of man-made or natural fibre that confuses me....

Can anyone help?

Stephen

Hi Stephen ,

A big question .

Wool    Nice Feel, Can be dyed with subtle shades, naturally some stain resistance .
Good UV resistance. Suprisingly good fire resistance/does not melt.

PP  Harsher, Hard wearing but can suffer colour loss, Relatively easy to clean as stains do not bond very well due to chemical composition. Poorer UV resistance, Melts/Burns easily.Dificult to achieve nice colours.

I'm sure others can add.

You pays your money  !

Cheers

Doug
