Smelly carpet
« on: October 14, 2007, 11:00:54 am »
Hi Guys,

Did a lounge on Friday, it was a Wool mix and a fairly deep pile.  You could see footprints in it when i arrived (Funny choice of carpet  :-\)

It was quite dirty (And a off white colour) so i vac'd it, then pre sprayed with Pre spray Gold and rinsed with Fibre n Fabric Rinse..

Anyway the Custy called and said the room smells real bad.  I used extra dry  passes with my machine to get as much water out as poss and they also left the patio open all day.

They do have a Cat which may have peed and i have re activated as well as a toddler that had spilt all kinds on it.

Going to take a peek later, is it worth giving it a mist of Lemon Refresh, telling him it will go on its own or recleaning with an anti bacterial mix?

Ta in advance..

Hi Dave

Without knowing what the source of mal-odour is, nobody will be able to give you a definitive answer.

If it's a wet sheep/wet dog problem, then time, boosted by a blower and ventilation is the best cure.

If it's a cat problem the soiling will require specific attention. Also, it could be, or also be, on a vertical surface and has been reactivated by the increase in humidity of cleaning.

Sour milk and other food should be treated as a specific problem, not general.

Although I don't use it as a "front line" cleaner, I find that M Power (I presume that Nemesis will be similar) will clean and have a beneficial effect on general carpet/room mal-odours.

IMO, the problem described is beyond the scope of Lemon Refresh.

Safe and happy cleaning :)

Hi Dave

I have found Prochem Cleansan to be a good general bactericidal deodouriser and this can be sprayed as a post treatment.

Cheers

Hi Dave,
Clensan should be sprayed and then extracted not left!
You can mix it with crystal green in the solution tank to clean and sanitize at the same time.

Your both right

About a year ago application of Clensan could be sprayed and left which, Doug is right it was a very good solution for this type of problem but for some reason it's application instructions have changed. I would like to kjnow why they did this because I have continued to use it in the old way but wonder if they had a problem with doing it.

Hi Pete

Your right they have changed it, I suspect it's a more cautious approach i.e everything should be rinsed rather than a formulation change.

One of the advantages of Clensan was that it remained active to continue to neutralise odours/bacteria.

Remember these are guidelines, you are still allowed to use your grey matter.

Cheers

Doug

Been to take look at said smelly carpet and it isnt too bad, more of a smell in the air rather than the floor.

They had been out and left the door and window shut (after it had dried) so i suggested it was an old spill reactivated in the underlay.

He said the cat has never pee'd in there but they had spilt all kinds.. Beer, Wine, Coffee     ::)

Hi Doug

Thinking about it retrospectively I can understand Prochem being cautious about no rinse out when you consider what it kills and therefore what it must contain (especially in domestic environments).

What I do is apply as soon as I get to a job that needs it. I figure by the time I've set up, Vacced pre-sprayed had a coffee it will have done what it needed to.
