Is this a scam?
« on: September 21, 2007, 12:50:16 am »
Hi Guys,

Received an email asking me for prices. I emailed back and gave a rough estimate based on what she told me, but said I would need to see the property to give a proper quote as it was impossible to tell without looking at it. She had asked me to supply my details in advance which I thought was weird and wants me to give her my bank details so she can set up payments before I've even started.

This is her reply to my email and I have copied and pasted so the poor english is exactly as the email was written. Does this sound a bit dodgy to you? Plus I don't understand the bit about "make some business", can anyone make any sense of it.

Reply:
"That will be lovely and i will want it to be cleaned  and i will instruct you on how to go about it ok.the payment will not be a problem as long as you have agreed to do your work.As long as your services is loyal and sincere with me i can afford to make a contract with you and make you have a good deal and a nice client ok..presently am trying to make some business on and i will let you know on how to work for me ok..And again i will want you to  forward the payment details as below to me. so that i can tell you what to do ..stay blessed and have a good day. i look forward ro hearing from you ."

What do you think?

Brian.

Well I don't need to ask,  ;) but thought I should in case anyone else has received emails written in this style and wondered if it was a common scam that I don't know about or (dread to think) if there is a possibility she could be genuine with really bad English.

Thanks Steven for mentioning it may be on other forums on this site. I did a search and there are loads of people, mainly on the window cleaners site who received this email.

"Hello,
I was browsing through the internet when i saw your ad.I need a window
cleaner in my mum house for the household work. give me the cost price per
window and i have about 6windows in house . let me know If you are
interested in this job and get back to me with your details.

full name..

address...

phone number...

amount per each window."

This is exactly the email I received and apparantly they ask you for your bank account details etc, similar to the Nigerian thing.

The reply email then asks for name on cheque, and so on.

Brian.

ok, if you get an email from hilary collins or from trinity_lasson@yahoo.com. It's a scam .... official. Lots of people on other forums received the same scam and I apologise for not searching this forum first.

I wonder if I should reply with some made up stuff and play them along a bit.  ;)

It would be interesting don't you think.

Apparantly, say you quote for £40. They send you a cheque for £500 and ask for you to return the other £460 or to send to their mother in Wales or something. But of course the international money transfer or cheque they send you is fake.

nah. The people who run these things are probably much more clued up than we give them credit for (i know they give the opposite impression) so its just not worth the agro.

Well, thats what i think.

Usually when you see words like blessed, truly blessed, mention of Heaven, jesus, god, my good friend, loyal & sincere, other business, mention of bank details, then the source is Usually Nigerian.

Just in case a similar email is not a scam:
Simply reply requesting THEIR details, address etc. Your reason being so that you can do a survey first. Don't give out your details to anyone 'cold-calling' on the internet - ever!

Unfortunately this is huge business in Nigeria and other countries. I think this one works in conjunction with the fake bank request to log on to your banking site. If they have recieved your bank details, some months later they use this in the scam email to make it look more authentic.
Sadly there are still so many stupid people that fall for it. They only need one hit to set them up for years in a poor country.
