Hi,

We have just finished cleaning 2 blocks of students accomodation at a local university.  I was surprised to find that Charlys out performed cotton bonnets using prochems bonnet buff.

We also tried some cimex encap with the charlys and i got to say that it worked a treat. (possibley better than bonnet buff)

Abolutely delighted with the results and a few K ritcher.

Whats your take on the cottons versus Charlys?

Have you compared them against standard white floor pads. I mean the abrasive pads which aren't abrasive if you know what I mean. Only a fiver each.

They will tell you that the charley pads are not as effective if they are not used with m/s.

They will also tell you that the Charleys will degrade if used with anything other than m/s

Hi,

I know they say that Charlys degrade with anything other than MS.   Very convienient.

They are nylon pads with a foam core and cotton stiching.   What bit degrades?

I understand thier concearn over strong acids.  Formic would disslove them.  However the acidity of bonnet buff or a cimex "shampoo" would never be enough to harm nylon.... i would quite happily clean a nylon floor or fibre with either without the risk of fibre damage.

A very well known trainer who knows much more than I, one said "i use them with standard bonnet chemicals and not noticed any difference".  I can cofirm this at least over 5km (half the supposed life of a charly).

I think they are more mobile, give better agitation and rinse better than a cotton.  At the end of the day, bonnet is about even dirt distribution, more than removal.

Dont belive the bull$hit made to make you use certian chemicals.

Thanks John. I wasn't sure what you meant, but as lately i've been playing around with bonnet cleaning i thought a fiver was good.

does the white 3m pad remove dirt from low profiles? was thinking of investing in charly pads, rather than 10 cotton pads, is it a wise move? what is the best chemical to use, if not m/s, bonnet buff or catalyst being the obvious 2, (i think)

Gary, bonnet cleaning does not remove much dirt. Ok the bonnets get dirty but they are not removing much. What you are doing is redistributing the dirt from the surface pile which results, usually in a very good "visual" clean.

here's a few of my random thoughts on Bonnet cleaning.

because bonnet cleaning relies on absorption A bonnet can only remove dirt that it actual touches this is why it is good for low profile commercial carpets, any stains or dirt deep within a carpet pile cannot be removed, unlike HWE, were the water can go into the pile dissolve dirt then is sucked out again.

a bonnet can only absorb dirt until it reaches an equal balance of 'soiledness' with the carpet meaning once the bonnet is more soiled than the carpet then the cleaning process is reversed and the carpet starts cleaning the bonnet. hence Johns comment about redistributing the dirt, a dirty bonnet across a clean part of the carpet will transfer dirt to that clean area

only cotton bonnets with absorb dirt, any man-made fibre with only collect dirt between its fibres making them ineffective at soil removal

I agree with Mike, only the cottons actually absorb any dirt.

In the age of encap, i wonder if this is actually any better than just leaving all of the dirt on the floor, but rearranging it.

With encap based solutions, the charlys leave the carpet looking just as good.  At the end of the day it isnt about how much dirt is removed, its about how even the soiling on the floor looks. 

I want to try a microfibre bonnet, do you think they would give better results?

I agree to a certain extent with what,s being said, but I and I'm sure a few others have been astonished by the successful removal of vast amounts of soiling when using pads.

In my case with Charleys and Texatherm, mainly, but also when experimenting with encapsulation products.

Last night I came across a strong endorsement of o/p cleaning by the manufacturer of the Cross American machines ( modified for use in the UK )

The endorsement was for John Guerlink who is steets ahead of the rest, but then, he has been o/p ing for over twenty years and has experience and knowledge on his side.

With another tax hike, today, I think many will be comparing the actual cost of providing their service and whether they might be wise to look hard at alternative methods.

If you were using encap' you are not redistributing  you are loosening, and capturing the soil, which will be removed either by yourself or follow up vacuuming

You are quite correct, We Scientists, know about the materials, compounds and magic potions  (DUH)! We Know how to clean carpets and Upholstery, because we have been trained, and also have been well educated................This is not a p take in general ,Just a wake up call for what we call splash'N' dash

Charlie Pads..possibly the biggest waste of £120 I have spent in 6 years of doing this business,and I've been known to waste some money on various ideas etc.
You only have to wring out a charlie pad to see how little dirt it picks up. Now I had this arguement with an industry expert for some time on the 'other cleaning channel' and I tried all the various suggestions made to me. It all become evident to me and hopefully others at the CCDO when after a charlie pad clean, a towel was used with another machine over the same exact area and when it was held up the towel was literally black.
Cotton pads by nature of being cotton will absorb, the other thing just moves dirt around the place.
