Shop windows what price?
« on: September 09, 2007, 08:07:44 pm »
One of my customers has asked me to clean the windows of her hairdressers, it has 2 windows about 10ft by 8ft and a door, she said her last cleaner has not been for 4 months, its about a 6 mile round trip for me, what should I charge, its just outside Leeds and there are a few other shops om the row what might need a cleaner as well

I wouldn`t bother with it,it`s this sort of situation that you should avoid you`ll end up being more of a taxi driver with no passengers if you know what i mean.6 mile round trip,if you price it properly there`s no way she`d pay it.

See if she can get you a few more shops to make it worth while. I find £5 for a small shop makes a good earner but some people will do them for £1 so its hard keeping them if you want an income from them.

Tell her you'll have to charge her travelling costs if its just the one job in the area, and add that onto what you think is a fair price for the windows. Don't undersell yourself,.. she'll understand that time is money, and the worst she can do is say no. Once you're there,.. try for a couple of the nearby shops,.. and if you get them,.. give her a bit of a discount.

At end of the day the jobs need doing, all you can do is price up your time, and then explain youll drop the rate due to travelling if you pick up more jobs in the area

youve got to say no to a fiver job with a six mile round trip...tell her to ask one of the other shop owners to pass on their cleaners details...pass on this one plenty more will come yr way.

or post the details on here there could be a cleaner that does that area..lets work together

I reckon you should price it around 6 or 7 quid and try to get other work in the area to make it worthwhile.  After all, any time someone asked you to a new area, you would be turning work down just because it was the first request.  If it doesn't work out after a few months and no more work is forthcoming, you can always pass the work on.

am i missing something here? if this shop has had no WC for 4 months then how many others did he have in the area? or maybe that was the only one so he dropped it.

anyway i would have a walk round the shops, see whats going on a try and make it worth my while otherwise leave it alone

There are all sorts of possible permutations so, as you say, maybe givew it a try and see what happens?
The view I take is that if he declines to quote for the job then it is probably lost forever.  However, if he quotes for and gets the job, there is an opportunity to get a foothold in a new area - possibly with some shops as well.

Just make it worth your while otherwise you won't stick it!

Even if you get 5-6 average size shops out of it i would still say it wasn`t worth it,in the time it takes you to do that 6 mile round trip you could earn that money elsewhere nearer to your other work.If i go further a field i always include travelling time otherwise what`s the point, your working for works sake.

HI,

Gosh,

You must be desparate to travel 6 miles for a £5 job. Knock on the doors in your street, your bound to pick up at least 5-10 new jobs.

I'm not desperate, I have plenty of work but it is 99% domestic, it would be nice to have some commercial work that I could get done early in the day and in any weather.
