I have been asked to pressure wash / clean an area of tarmac with a block paving path set into it. What would be the best way of completing the task please? Would I need to resand the block paving, if so what would this involve?

What would you charge?

You need to work out how much tarmac versus how much block paving, then just clean the whole lot as usual paying attention to the tarmac as it shows stripes, then sand it up and lastly blow the sand off with a petrol blower as the silt stays in the tarmac more so if its rough

Thanks BCDS, I was not sure about presure washing tarmac as I have heard its easy to damage. would you use any chemical cleaner or just water. There are several large tyre marks that will need removing.

You can clean tarmac without problem, you will find the old tarmac comes up to the colour of the tyre marks. you won't damage it unless it was layed wafer thin and it would have shown up already. The only problem is it shows the stripes if you rush, chewing gum appears because you clean the dirt off the top and the silt is a pain to move on. you can use acids on tarmac but do not use degreaser, solvants or petroleum based products as they break down the tar

You must remember not to resand the blocks untill they are dr,y  the blocks should have a wacker plate put over them wilst resanding as the sand will not fillter down to lock the blocks in tight again.

I personally would'nt put a wacker o washed blocks because there should be no need, the sharp sand below should not have been disturbed and so long as the resanding is done when the blocks are dry the sand will flow into the joints -everyone has their own way of doing things and if you like to hump wackers thats up to you !

You don't need to whaker them especially if you use a flat surface cleaner as it will only wash half an inch or so out

Not using a wacker gives me loads ot extra work lifting blocks as i allso do landscaping, yes you are right if you  use a flat surface cleaner but if you use a lance you will wash most of the sand out.You also don't have to "hump wackers" as you can hire a compact waker plate. The wacker will still compact the sand to tighten the blocks which ever way you clean them.

I'd not worry about the wacker plate.  Very dry blocks and good dry sand and no problem.
