Jeff1 or the like can probably help me out with this one.

I understand what a split charge relay does but I've absolutely no idea how it does it or how TO do it and the ins and outs of ampage etc. Also its advantages and disadvantages.

Say I have an 85 amp hr leaisure battery and I want to set up a split charge system what do I need and how do I fit it? Also will I need to top up with a proper standalone charger?

I can wire a plug up but thats about it

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I did a very big topic with complete explanation and diagram on the Trainging academy, I did post it on here a long time ago and the topics just disappear over time, on the academy its under a sticky in the a-z links, so you can print it off, or just keep going back to it. it might look a bit daunting to some one that can just wire a plug but its not that difficult.

If you are a little unsure about vehicle wiring I would recommend taking it to an aut electrician.

I bought a kit about a year ago from ebay can't remember which amp kit i bought though.
It was about £35 and well worth it.

Easy to fit and have never charged my battery since

I had a good read of the sellers description and by what I read, it seems a very good deal, it only has 2 cables so your skill at wiring plugs with 3 wires should be ok  

it still made me smile though, if it only has 2 wires then why does it come with 3 x A4 sheets of Comprehensive instructions and wiring diagrams  

The benefit of having a larger kit for a larger battery means less trouble from blown fuses, longevity or years of trouble free service as it is designed for a specific size battery in mind with all cables, fuses, relay etc correctly rated for the job without stressing out an undersized kit from larger currents that will be involved with larger batteries or banks of batteries

The above description is from the seller, and its one of the best pieces of advice I would agree with, bigger is better,  
if you do a reasonable milage then you should have no need to remove your battery for a top-up charge, if you do little milage then the need to remove your battery for a top-up charge may be Necessary.

He!He! I always post good topics were I know they will be saved, it a shame this forum doesnt have a sticky or a-z section were post can be quickly found. The diy,Training Academy and the cleaningpro's forums have saved the topic and others I posted, but they have all gone from this forum.

i think any caravan shop or electrical outlet  sell a a split relay charger its  about £17.99

its easy to install you attach a red and black to the box its about the size of a match box then you take one red wire through the bulk head to your lesuire battery . Done!! the box will make a clicking sound when operating

it takes a current when you drive and will turn of when not driving. the hardest part is feeding the wire through

I am having my split charge relay fitted tomorrow morning.
I was asked to quote for cleaning the sign of a local garage/auto electricians a one off job which I would of charged £30.00
But before I told him the price I suggested to the bloke how about he supply and fit a split charge relay for me to which he agreed!!!
Fantastic, and he also wants a quote for his home windows so thats a added bonus.
