« on: August 02, 2007, 05:38:05 pm »
Hi guys,
Anyone no how you go about getting into carpet fitting? does anyone on here offer it as another service. Been thinking of broadening my horizons and perhaps adding additional services to my carpet and upholstery cleaning business.
regards
matt

I have been offering carpet fitting as well for 27 years. I have never really pushed it, but clients know I do it and so I do quite a bit of it. I initially was self taught after reading a few books then went on an 8 month part time course at Kidderminster Textile College. Also the trade associations amy run courses.

Thanks for your swift reply dave. So it doesn't take a great deal to learn then? What sort of tools are needed and how do you go about purchasing the carpet you supply? Also if you don't mind me asking what sort of rates do you charge is it similar pricing to carpet cleaning?
Thanks
matt

Matt,

Fitting is not as easy as it looks. A guy near me has a carpet shop (ex Allied) his fitters wouldnt or couldnt do certain jobs, so he went on a fitters course at Brintons in Kidderminster, he's now got the certificate etc and knows what fitters can do and most of all how to do it, to Brinton standards.

If you do the course there it doesnt matter if you ruin the carpet, it does if you ruin it on site!!!!!!!!!!

Have fun.

Matt, why not find a carpet fitter close (but not too close) to yourself and offer your services (labouring etc) for a couple of days to get a feel for the job and IF it suits you? Personally i started at eight years of age working with my father and was self-employed at 17. Its a hard job with lifting etc but to know all the in's and out's you need to know about planning for H/L/S (hall, landing and stairs from broadloom widths or "body" carpet) seaming joins fitting vinyls and a whole host of other items that you WILL NOT pick up overnight! Then there is commercial and domestic work-(each of which have different methods of preparation etc) As for supplying you WILL NOT get a reputable trade warehouse to drop at your door-you need a business address! Its not easy at all but I LOVE IT! 8)

damian

you will not get a reputable trade warehouse drop at your door,
i do william pownalls, cormar, assiosated weavers, georgian,
plus more, most say brintons, axminster  you would have all on to drop at a buisness address.
probably helps i had 1 warehouses and 4 showrooms, for 12 years and a family background.
god a miss it

Darren youve answered your own question-if you have traded with these companies for a number of years they wont want to lose your trade if you are moving metres! However for a new start up the chances are very RARE!
If you had a warehouse and showrooms then why give it up? I know i wouldnt give up mine.

+ at the time i was a little on the low side, but met a great girl and got a couple of great kids now, and the way i work now suits our lifestyle, we get a couple holis abroad each year, plenty camping weekends and time spent as a family, plus you get older and a bit happy with what you got

Are you taking the p**s it takes years to become a carpet fitter you just cant go on course and then say your a fitter. If you are serious ring a local fitter and ask him if he needs a helper for the next 6 years and get used to the £50 a week. ::)

Agreed.

Same as if someone came on this forum and said the same thing about starting carpet cleaning.
Most pf us would turn around and point out that it is not as simple as going on a course and overnight becoming a c/c.

However, as people have already said it is more than possible to pick up the very basics but as for planning and supplying carpet, that takes many years to get right!
If life was easy, it would be boring

Alltec are doing a 2 day carpet installation and repair course in october,as good advice has already been said ,you won,t become a fitter overnight ,but the basic knowledge of fitting is a very handy tool to have in your locker.

No but my Missus is a master at it when she goes to that 'womans place' at the east side of the city with the glass titty ontop.
