Dry clean a Laura Ashley rug????????
« on: July 30, 2007, 06:22:53 pm »
Custy on phone just now. Has a 8 x 6 ft Laura Ashley rug. Label says 47% wool and 53% cotton. Also label says SPECIALIST DRY CLEAN ONLY.  Any ideas chaps. With all that wool I would have thought a wet clean for sure. She desribed the colour as "tapestry" ie multi coloured.
CAN I WET CLEAN IT?????????

Thanx
Chris

Judging by your thread you have not seen it. You don't look like a new hand. The Laura Ashley thing is irrelevant. You need to to look at it and run some tests. I can't see anyone giving you an opinion beyond that unless it is to use a ph neutral light moisture (or solvent even) clean.

I reckon your biggest likely problem will be dye bleed in which case you may have to go down the solvent route.

I have a Laura Ashley catalog, every piece of furniture is 'specialist dry clean only',  just do your normal tests and proceed

I have done a lot of L/A rugs that are the thin tapestry type with no problem.

These rugs are not usually a problem.
They are usually red or beigh pattern and do not run.
They sometimes have a brown cotton band a few inches wide running under the length of each side.
This band will usually shrink a little and the edge will curle a little after drying.
If it has a cotton band underneath, explain the curling problem to the custy first.

Exactly John

These do tend to curl up when wet and usually stay that way when they are dry too! they dont always go back so definately explain this. I had one a few weeks ago, and after clarifying it with her at the quote she was fine and went ahead anyway. Sure enough it curled but she was delighted with it. A dry clean would'nt have touched it.

I'm sure pinning it down prior to cleaning would be fine...but not always practical to do so. I'm sure Lionha will have more to say on this?

This rug will ripple if wet cleaned .The safest way is fix it to a board and wet clean it on the board and leave to dry before re-moving fixings.

Why would you not bother after all that excellent advice. ::)

If you follow it then there wont be any problems, and you could've charged top dollar for having the know how.

There the sort of jobs you want, that others turn away, it turns you from being just a carpet cleaner into a proffesional.

We clean quite of few of these type rugs and if you do a good job there excellent for repeat business. we find people have there rugs cleaned more often than fitted carpets, probably because they get taken away and cleaned and brought back like new and its no hassle to them at all!

i would think seriously before you trun away a job like this, they would be customer for life.

Servicemaster used to do all of their work.

They used to be recommended on the label.

Seems like they have lost that line of work as well.

if your taking it away to clean, leave it overnight with a large board weighted down on top this usually leaves it loverly and flat.

Sounds like a tufted rug.

So I can ID the rug just send me some pics and I will send you back a safe and effective prescription for its care without using and expensive tools or machinery.

99% of the time you can do these yourself with just a little coaching.

1. overall pic
2. close up pic to show corner and end (in focus so i can see the knots)
3. pics of any areas of concern.

Stephen

Im afraid there wont be any knots and it wont be tufted!

I'm sure Chris is referring to the usual Laura Ashley rugs which are either Cotton, Cotton/Wool or Cotton/Wool/Polyester

In North America I have never seen a Laura Ashley rug, however I am sure it is just like something else we do all the time.

Pics are the only way I can ID a rug to make a prescription for it's care, short of having it in my hands.

am cleaning some right now, described as chenille and are 100% cotton.

problem with them is fact they have no weight, so clean like you cleaning a sheet!

Normally take a fair time to dry tho, even with movers and heat.

I normally use a large sheet of ply to sort out the inevitable ripples after cleaning.
