Thomsons Water Seal
« on: July 26, 2007, 07:45:06 pm »
Hi, I have a customer who has recently sprayed his house walls with Thomsons Water Seal but did not protect the windows!
Therefore, there is now a fine film over the glass and I have tried scrubbing with green scourer and detergent and tried a blade but to no avail.
Has anyone had a similar problem and what did you use? ??? ???

Maybe there is something that will shift it but I gave up.  I told the customer that I was happy to clean the windows but that the water proofing stuff wouldn't budge.  A few months later she changed all the frames.

DUDE never ever ever ever use a green scourer always use a white non scratch
 one

The green will almost certainly scratch most windows leaving you with a nasty bill
secondly Thompson's does what its supposed to and seal and being water proof and
blade proof I have not found a way of getting it off either and I have been shining
for 24 years.

what about phoning Thompson's direct??EDD

I also had a guy change all the windows cos of this stuff

I don't know what instructions come with the sealant but there really ought to be a prominent instruction to mask all frames and glass.

I did a farm for a wc friend while he was busy, the windows were covered in the stuff, not even a scraper could get it off, you can buy a silicon eater, that might do the trick, Luke

I had a customer who got ronseal decking sealer and it took me a couple of month trying differant things before i found something that would shift it.

In the end traffic film remover diluted 1-1 and a white pad got it off.

Don't know if it would shift thompson water seal but may be worth a try.

Try white spirit, water seal is only silicone rubber dissolved in white spririt, once the white spirit evaporates the silicone becomes solid, so if you put white spirit on it the silicone should dissolve.

You could try a spray called contractors solvent from screwfix i have used this in the past to remove silicone, gloss paint and various adhesives and glues etc. http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?cId=101757&ts=61879&id=20534

Thanks for all the advice. I think Ill try the white spirit as I have some lying around. Im not due to do the house again for about 3 weeks but I'll let you know how it goes.
I will also try Thomsons website and see if they recommend anything if it doesn't work.
