Best method for egged windows?
« on: June 25, 2007, 01:57:09 pm »
Hi Guys,
Have agreed to do a job next week where a couple of windows have been egged (been on for 12 month) .Thing is, the windows are 3rd storey but with the slope of the road it's more like 4th storey.
There's no access from inside and don't fancy attempting ladders. (Have W.F.P)
Any ideas for safest/effective method?

Cheers all

Ouch! Nasty one!

Unless you have access to a hot water system the only effective way is trad I'm afraid :-\ And after 12 months that egg will be REALLY set on there.

Cheers Ian,
Not what i wanted to hear.
I don't even own a set of ladders that long.
Will have to practice my ladder technique using 6ft step-ladder!!

Thanks again.

i had a 3rd storey house that had a egg'ed window

i soaked with with water TWICE, giving it a scrub inbetween

then i took the brush off the pole and attached a scraper and scrapped the window, then put the brush back on the brushed for a while

in the end it came off, took me about 15 mins to do the window though

BUT it was all from the floor

Even with just hot water it's difficult to shift if it's been on for ages and is well and truly baked on from the sun. I pump some Traffic Film Remover up an old WFPole, leave for 5-10mins then scrubb and rinse off with hot/cold water, repeat if necessary. OR with a 'Tucker' detergent dispenser add some cleaning tablets and WFP, leave to soak 5-10 mins again and WFP off with a scrubb and hot/cold water, repeat if necessary. Either method works but the hotter the water the better!

The only really effective method is a scraper.  Buy a pole scraper and tape it onto the top of whichever pole you are using, pre-soak it first and then give it a good scrape.  Whilst this is a bit of a fiddle, its probably the easiest way of doing it.

Alex,

can you 100% guarantee you won't scratch the glass using a scraper 3 levels up because you can't see the job up close whilst you're scraping the egg off? I never use a scaper because 2 people in the past have accused me of scratching their glass with a scraper when I don't even possess one.

Just a question on this for those of us that would find this tricky.

If we got an old applicator, sprayed some TFR on to it and used that on the pole to get it onto the egg would you figure a similar result?

Hi Easyclean

I'm pretty sure of my abilities in scraping that high up but I can't guarantee anything!  :)

The TFR on an applicator sounds good too.

i use one of these, once pumped to full pressure it will shoot around 4 meters, can be used safely on a ladder as well

I got TFR on glass and it was a real job to get the streaky lines off that it left.

I've used Screen Wash before and found it worked quite well.

I tied an old cloth over an old brush which i soaked in Screen Wash and gave it a good rub with that.

After leaving it for a while whilst i cleaned the other windows i went back to it and washed it with pure water.

It didn't take too much effort to come off.

Here's a tip if you wish to pump TFR up to high windows or guttering using a garden sprayer. On the hose just before the hand held trigger, cut the hose and fit a male and female microbore schrader connection together with an on/off valve. That way you can connect it to an old WFP with microbore Schrader fitting too. Make sure the tap on the garden sprayer is turned off, then pump up the sprayer, extend the WFPole on the high window with the egg on it and turn the tap on, (there's plenty of pressure to reach 3 storey windows) to apply the TFR and give a good scrub and leave for 5-10 mins. If possible connect to an outside tap and use normal water to rinse the remains of the egg off whilst cleaning out your old WFPole of any TFR.
