Safe Contractor
« on: June 05, 2007, 08:48:54 pm »
I have noticed people on this site advertising a logo for 'safe contrator' could you please tell me the benafits of being a member and was it worth while for you.
Also a weblink would be useful!

It's a good logo to have on the van and stationary I think it could help sell my services a little more when i put in for the bigger commercial work.
thanks,
Rob.

does the badge have any power with companies not registered with them, i.e. smaller building contractors etc? or is it only of any significance to companies who are on the s/c listings?

I went to do a job in Manchester, I could not even get onto the site as I was not CSCS registered, I told them I was Safe contractor and they had never even heard of it .
I think that its a little club, if you are a large company and are Safe contractor yourself you will use another Safe Contractor company. I suppose  you could look on the Safe Contractor web site for a company then send them your details telling them you are also Safe Contractor

cscs card and safe contractor are nothing to do with each other. Cscs is run by the CITB board and the HSE

CSCS - Construction Skills Certification Scheme. Commercial work you be ok only really need it for building sites (new builds) You Have to take a H/s Exam and the when you do you application you will need some to sponser your application (ie contractor who you may have worked for before)

I guess from that response all you would get for your money is a pretty logo on the van and stationary.

Managed to survive very well up to now without being a member of any oranisation just liked the look of the safe contrator sign!
Won't be joining!!

Have a meeting next week with the FSB that looks very worth while.
If i was to get a tax investigation they would pay accountancy fees which could run in to a lot of money as my accoutant charges £70 hour  :o.
I thought we charged a lot!!!!
have a look at the carpet cleaning section there is currantly a topic on the FSB.

Thanks for the replys,
Rob.

firstly, its NOT a legal reguirement to have a cscs card. Secondly, they dont actually do one for a window cleaner, you are registrered as either a cleaner or frequent visitor. And thirdly, you try getting onto a builing site without one, even though its not a legal requirement

A couple of weeks ago I went on the CSCS web site looking for information about the card for window cleaners. I could not find one so I sent them a email and here is part of there reply

Quote
Through the Construction Related Occupation route of entry we have the
two following occupations that might be suitable window & door
maintenance operative or cleaner.  We do not have a Window Cleaning CSCS Card
currently.

From personal experience I found the FSB a complete waste of time and money. I wont elaborate but they did nothing for me at all. I am sure there are others who would disagree but thats my opinion.
