TDS meter sounds about right.  You need that TDS to decide what type of filtering to use.
RO would probably work out cheaper longterm but at least DI only won't break the bank.

with that tds reading from tap i would go DI only to start with, then maybe if you start using it more go for another DI unit & use them both in sequence.

its not always a case of which would be cheaper, take me for example: I have a 400ltr van set-up with 2 x DI, my tap tds is 106, now, i use wfp most days & only have to buy between 2 to 3 bags of resin per year @ about 80 quid each. so it maybe costs me 200 quid per year for all my pure water + i dont have to have any holding tanks in garage, no booster pump, no membranes etc to fanny about with, no waiting overnight to fill up, no waste water etc. etc. :'( my DI vessels are in the van, i fill my 400ltr tank in about 15/20 mins from tap, if i run out of water during the day i just fill up from customers tap- pure water on demand with DI only set up. ;)
Do you see my point, i have all these advantages & no hassle for the grand total of 200 quid per year ;D ;D ;D

With that tap tds i wouldn't look twice at an RO.

P.S. the 2 x di vessels make your resin last longer, it gives you the ability to use up ALL the resin in each vessel.

no probs, dont know nowt abart back packs but shop about for 11Ltr DI vessels the price can vary quite a bit, try to get reconditioned ones, although, cleantech sold my brother in law one for 68 quid +vat (brand new, with no resin) a couple of months ago, they used to be 150 quid!!

Tacky, being from Gwent some years ago where exactly are you, because such a low tap TDS reading surprises me.

50 quid for a 10Ltr vessel sounds good to me tacky, not too sure weather to start with just one vessel or both, dont think it really matters, the first in line will be spent quicker anyway,it sounds like you know what you are trying to acheive & thats the main thing.
Me personaly, i find DOWEX mb-50 resin the best but i've only used purolite before & the dowex lasts far better. I know streamsupplies sell it.

Being that far up the valleys (I'm origionaly from Blackwood) I won't dispute your readings of 83 ppm.
You now have have 2 varients. You could just go with DI because the source water TDS is quite low or go with RO system only as it should produce in excess of 12 months usable water if you are careful with 5 ppm.
Looking at the longer picture I would in your case start with DI and then in the future think of movig to RO with DI to finish off the water.

I would agree with Neil, a DI unit would be fine if you are just doing a small amount of WFP, however if you were using 400ltrs or more every day then it may be worth looking at a small RO system.

However remember if you get an RO and your water is metered, you put as much down the drain as goes into your tank.

By the way our water up here is nearly 300ppm >:(

i have never used just di cylinders as we bought a 300gpd r/o unit when we first got the kit for wfp. it is a bit of an inconvenience having to fill up overnight. my tds in is about 80 so would i be able to use the same set up, we constantly run out of water before we have finished the day and would love to be able to fill up whilst out working is it possible to get 450 ltrs in about 20 mins if so i dunno why we are using an r/o.
obviously there is the cost of the resin but it would be great as an add on to what we do now so that we can fill up anywhere we have to
thanks

yes, totally possible if the outside tap pressure is good. remember your filling your tank with tap water directly & the DI,s purify it after the pump, so the water in the tank is not pure. With 80 tds tap water i dont know why you were sold an RO, people seem to think that it is miles cheaper than DI only but thats only true in hard water areas. I know someone who was sold the full bag of mashings, cost him a fortune with all van kitted out with RO & the things that go with it, he runs out of water all the time. When i explained the DI set up to him & how little resin actually cost me over a year, he was well peed off :o. there are far more benefits to DI only set ups than RO's with a soft water input. These days with 2 x DI's & the knowlage of prolonging the life of resin (backflushing or shaking the vessels) when tds starts to rise its a no brainer.

so you fit the di vessels after the pump on the van and that pushes the water through the vessel and purifies it on the way through, i had assumed th di vessels would be before the tank and purified water would be pumped straight into the tank. does this not put extra pressure on the pump and will a 100psi pump be ok for 2 users both with 100 mtrs microbore.
thanks again macmac
