Many prefer the anonimity of 5000 leaflets, but if you do go that way you need to convert them by calling back no more than 2-3 days later and ask a very simple question- Did you get my leaflet ?
Always ask a question, you should get some sort of answer and take it from there.

Sorry to bother you, i'm xxxxxx from xxxxxx this is my flyer, have you got a regular window cleaner already? "no" would you like me to give you a quick quote?
or if the answer is "yes" o.k, sorry to have taken up your time, but if you're current wc'r lets you down, you've got my number now so just give me a call, i'm trying to expand my business in this area anyway so any new customers are welcome.

Try this, deliver a large number of leaflets in a particular area. Do it in a structured way so that every road is covered. Keep a record of where you've done. Wait till you get the calls from the leaflets. This may take a long time so don't fret about it.
Once you get several customers in reasonably close proximity canvass the houses in between them and / or the rest of the street.
Before you canvass them deliver a second leaflet with " I was working in your street today............"
Then go back a couple of days later and say "Oh Hello, I left a leaflet a couple of days ago about window cleaning. Would you like me to do yours?"

Always keep a record of what you've done and keep it structured. You can do follow up leaflets every so often in areas that you already cover.

Don't just canvass willy nilly or you will end up with customers scattered all over.

There are many Ways that trigger the mid to say yes.

We aim to get 1 in 15 customers signing up, and this is on houses priced at £30 upward.

We sometimes have existing rounds and established rounds for sale here.

never begin a pitch with "i am sorry to bother you"

I am a window cleaner would you like to have your windows cleaned (works well)
I am a window cleaner and I would like to clean your windows           (works better)

cor blimey you must have the dirtiest windows in the whole street.    ( has worked)
is your mum home                                                                                 (has not)

Hi everybody,

I have been reading this forum for some time now and just want to say that I have had some invaluable tips from the posts on this webiste. this is the first time I have posted, but felt that my experience may help some of you.

I have had a few businesses in the past, but got itchy feet and never really felt right up until now.

Anyway I will stop rambling, lets talk about canvassing.

I started my window cleaning business 10th April 2007,I bought 5000 a6 350gsm full colour flyers for £99 and started delivering them my self 3 days a week. I now have 49 customers exactly 1 month on and these customers are now worth £7280 per year to me allready. As you can imagine I am jumping through hoops at this result as Ive only delivered 1200 flyers so far. , I am on target for a total of 100 customers in another 6 weeks which will be worth £14800 per year to me and thats working on my own.

20 of these customers pay me online from my website, 5 pay by cheque and the rest cash on completion, I have not yet needed to call on these customers in the evening for payment, simply because of the setup I have and the customers think it's a great service I offer.

Ok! now that I have your attention, how did I do it!!

(1) On one side of the leaflet on a white background I put the words. DO YOU NEED A WINDOW CLEANER in large red letters.

Then underneath that I put:

If you do please leave this leaflet in your window somewhere I can see it and I will call back in a few days to give you a price and clean your windows.

Then underneath that I put:

Alternatively you can call me Tony on mobile to arrange a quote.

(2) On the other side of the leaftet on a bright yellow background I put: YES PLEASE CLEAN MY WINDOWS in very large red letters.

As the thought of canvassing gives me the willys, I thought I would try this approach and bingo ;D the leaflets started turning up in peoples windows and im getting phonecalls from leaflets I delivered 3 weeks ago.   it worked like a dream.

This really does work with excellent results.

I would just like also say that I got this idea off one of the threads on this forum, the guy who thought this idea up is a genius.

P.S. I use a waterfed pole system from my van.

Regards

Tony Brown

 ;D

UPDATE: 12/05/2007: 3 days after this original post my round is now worth £8700 per year.

If a householder tells you they have a w/cleaner, never under any circumstances offer to under cut them.
I've had this happen over the years to many of my existing customers and those that have reported it to me have always said it put them right off even when the offer would have meant a substantial saving.

Also, if you succeed in getting any customers this way, they won't be reliable ones.

If they tell you they have a w/cleaner then follow 'Cleaner Windows' advice above.

The trouble with canvassing is that you get about a second to grab their attention and if they are not in the right frame of mind or the wrong member of the family opens the door then you have had it.
I have had replies from leaflets two years after I delivered them and also from places where I have never delivered to ever.

Saying that I accept that a lot of my leaflets go in the bin unread. So the best answer I can give to the original question on this thread ( what gets the best results when canvassing?) is to say persistance works best. Keep at it and never give up. You learn what works best for you as you go along.

i keep it dead simple (well used to, i haven't had to canvass for a good while now)

"hello, would you like a quote for window cleaning?"

short and sweet

they can't ignore you like they can a leaflet

if it's a no, leave them with a leaflet in case they change their minds (or the missus sees the leaflet) or in case their current w/c'er lets them down

i find you can knock alot of doors in a short time like this

i used to get about 1 in 5 people asking for a quote    :)

If you call during the day rather than the evening, your more likely to speak to the lady of the house.  Generally, the woman of the house knows whats going on more then the husband.

Many a time I've spoken to the husband and he's said "no" straight away or "we do our own" (yeah, looks like it NOT).  5 minutes later the wife has come out running down the street after me saying to ignore her husband, he doesnt know anything and they've needed a window cleaner for 5 years or something like that.

Not always, but a lot of times its better to speak to the wife.
