Not such a silly question as it may initially appear Scott. I was in Western Australia earlier this year and was expecting a similar approach to floor covering as those in the Mediteranean Countries. After all, the climate is not too dissimilar. But I was surprised to find that the residential floor coverings were virtually identical to our market in the UK. The only exception was that kitchens and bathrooms were always hard covered.

As for large office buildings, soft flooring will always win. The insulative properties (sound and climate control), underfloor cabling maintenance and uplift for re-arranging desks (happens more often than you may think) and cost of maintenance are all major benefits over hard floor coverings. Yes, there's a lot of upside down ;)  carpet in Australia.

Safe and happy cleaning:)

hi ken... i gathered that, sorry i had my sunday morning sarcastic head on as usual..whilst on the subject of flooring..the most common argument that people keep bringing up to me these days, (and boy ,is it winding me up)..is that everone is getting laminate flooring these days..i tell them that the damn things are dangerous, and that if that were the case, the carpet shops would be out of business by now. do you get this sort of banter going on?

Yeah

But it's usually when they tell me how disappointed they are with the overall performance of the laminate, and wish they'd never bought the stuff.

Safe and happy cleaning:)

I find that the most common first step toward laminate flooring is the hallway.

As soon as I spot this in one of my regulars properties I say "Well, the lounge carpet will be dirtier than usual".

I am seldom wrong in this and explain the the reason the hall carpet got dirty was that it was functioning as an extended doormat - a task taken over by the first carpet encountered.
