choose your charity, ask charity what they will supply, (try and choose a date where a charity is doing a natinal campaign, ie: breat cancer awareness week)
choose fundraising ideas, tomboloa, raffle, local radio dj in the beans in the bath, (donate a £1 and you get to tip a can of beans on them, wixes or b&q donate you a bath, sainsbury donate the beans_etc
choose the date
confirm date with mayors office, move your date to suit mayor if needed
contact radio, let them know, ask what support they will give you. confirm dates etc,
organise a team of friends, work, colleagues, family and designate jobs to them, about 5 or 6 people will do the job
hire a big fluffy ""pugsey bear" type costume & designate someone to walk round in it,
contact the papers
contact local televsion (although i have never managed to get them to turn up, the story is never good enough i think)
aim to collect at least a £1000 in a city, or £300 in a small market town., this will involve walking around pubs asking for donations in the tin(suppliedby charity) canvassing the street,
as keith said as well, a local prominent MP is as good as the mayor, i have seen local business being supported by an MP in the press before
how that so far, It probably sounds like a lot of organising, but realy its mostly telephoneing around, you'll have a great laugh doing it, get publicity for your business and raise money for charity, everyones a winner.
put pen to paper, and get people involved to help you!

john
