I have just realised/remembered that the rules applying to Bulgarian and Romanian nationals are different to those that applied to the Polish/Czech Republic

As I understand it Bulgarians can come & go & live freely but with regard to working, unless they fit in to a a small list of specialists such as doctors/governments employees/au pair etc they need to apply for a Work Permit BEFORE they can start work.

The application form is 14 pages long - the application fee is £153 and the guidance material states that they do not issue work permits for unskilled jobs.

So I suppose my real question is does anybody have any first hand experience of this process, was the application successful, how long did it take, what would you do differently next time around ? etc

Hopefully somnebody can shed some light on this

It's the employer who has to apply, not the employee.

Thanks for pointing that out but it was just badly worded by me in the original post.

As I am the employer I want to have an idea of the chance of success before I shell out £153 and fill out a 14 page government form!

I have spoken to the Workers registration Scheme office and they tell me that if the person does not have one of the reconized skills then it would be quite difficult to get approval, however, they are permitted to work in the food industry and on the land if they are unskilled.

My advice is to ask first to the relevent authority.
