« on: March 08, 2007, 05:00:52 pm »
Anybody else noticed the part time summer brigade has started early this year, just this week ive had a dozen or so customers tell me they,ve had leaflets or have had the door knocked regarding the windows being cleaned, must be the spell of warm weather we,ve been having  :-\
A bad days fishing is better than a good days work !

If they've woken up early, there might not be enough customers for them to feed on so they will die off anyway.

same old, same old, they will always be there and will never go away. As long as we do our work to the best of our ability they shouldn't cause any problems.

the good thing that you pointed out, your customers tell you, but they are still your customers!! keep up the good work!

I am not sure exactly how this message should read?

New members are always welcome and any advice they need should be freely available on here. I have been doing this 15 years and learn new stuff on here all the time, wish I new about it when I started up!!

Just to chip in. I'm new and looking to get started in the next few weeks. I'm completing my business plan, with CF projections, P&L Forecast, Marketing budget etc.
(Umm some cowboy)

I've worked outside for the last 13 years in all kinds of weather. Working 18 hr day’s sometimes and 12 hrs through the night at temperatures of - 12˚ c, so I'm well aware of what will be involved.
Unfortunately you don’t get a choice in what season or month you are made redundant
(Umm some fair weather worker)

No doubt there are the fair weather window cleaners out there but to have a go at Newbies who are taking the time to research and learn their stuff instead of going straight out there and giving window cleaners a bad name is a bit unfair. To have a snipe at the NEW members on a Forum makes me >:(

Why do the Newbie critics come on the forum? To do exactly the same has us, get help and advice, swap ideas, network with others.

If any of the Anti-Newbie brigade wanted to sell some of their equipment would they tell a Newbie to sod off!! I only sell to the 20 yr Pro

Umm just a thought!!

Thanks for the welcome :P

I don't think anyone is having a go at new window cleaners.
When all you new guys get established, and it takes a hell of a lot of hard work.
You will be pretty miffed, if a part timer tries to pinch your customers, by offering to
do the job for half price. This is particularly true in the case of guys who emerge in the summer and then disappear in the winter, often leaving behind customers that think that £3.50 is the going rate for the job.
I do think that the increased pressure of government, to get workshy people off benefits, will inevitably have an effect on the number of guys wanting to try window cleaning. Many come into it thinking it's easy money. they don't last long, but can do a lot of damage in a short time. Dai

as i know from experiance! ive been doing this job for years now and took some work a while back from someone as he was giving up due to a supposed injury. one example was a three bed detatched house, georgian windows throughout which i went and quoted at £35 which was a fair price believe me! but the customer said the other chap had been doing for £15!! shocking!!

I dont see us newbies on this forum as the same as the summer brigade to be honest, i doubt very much the summer workers would even get as far as finding this forum, that would imply they were researching the market etc, they just think easy money get some ladders and a few rags and off they go. But i may be wrong.

why don't you guys try talking about something positive. All this bitching isn't going to solve nothing. If you stick to your prices then you don't have to worry, the good window cleaners will always survive ,and the bads ones come and go.So if you treat your customers good then if they leave you they aren't worth having. Let some cheap hack do there glass and make a mess of it all.

All newbies welcome...why heck, just 3 or 4 years ago I was a forum newbie too!

It's always good to see fresh faces ;)

On the subject of the 'Summer Brigade', as all the other experienced pro's say, they've always been part and parcel of the window cleaning scene.
By and large window cleaning has always been one of the cheapest and easist business to set yourself up in.
An old  ladder, a bucket, couple of tea towels and a car squeegee from halfords, oh, not forgetting the sponge from the local Spar shop!

It doesn't take that long for the 'easy money' ones to realise it is anything but.

It takes many months to build up a round, and longer still to become truly adept at the job, and many who start out eventually find it is easier to go work for someone else, get set hours, holiday pay and all the other benefits of the employed...

How many times do we here new customers tell us they can't find a regular window cleaner??

Times, they are a changing of course, with the increasing pressure from Health & Safety, working off ladders is slowly becoming a no-no, ergo this means that start up costs for those wishing to go the WFP route are much, much higher.

WFP is also a real catch 22 for the newbie, you waggle a brush on a stick with a bit of water squirting through the brush and hey presto! Job done ;)

It isn't like that in reality, and the pricing of work, at least for the total newbie becomes even more important than before, just about everyone underprices to begin with, butthe impact on that if you start out WFP is far greater as initial investment and greater running costs have to be taken into consideration.

Much as it has always been, they will still continue to see what they can turn over in a single hour as their wage, then at some point in the future they will realise that they are actually earning peanuts :'(
The upshot being that many of those that start out WFP thinking they are goingto be earning easy money and will be driving a 5 series Beamer in no time will fall by the wayside

I know I'm kind of meandering now with this reply! But I think the best way into WFP is via trad window cleaning, once you've learned the trad way, and you've learned how to price correctly, should you change to WFP (and you aren't stupid enough to start lowering your existing prices :-\) you will start to earn decent money, and if you were earning good money before as a trad window cleaner, then you'll probably go on to by the wife a 3 series Beamer to park alongside your 5 series one on the drive! 8)

Ian (in musing mode :P)
