car valeting in this weather
« on: March 05, 2007, 12:35:49 am »
Just starting out and this weather is scaring me noahs arc and all that. How are you supposed to make a living and it looks bad when im letting new customers down.I am thinking of buying a cover to work under but for one thing where do you put on up in busy built up areas and i am a one man show and those things need at least two people.I just feel like im doomed before i start in this business and after all the build up im finding it hard to get enthusiastic about my new venture. The only thing im saying to my self is i can make enough on the good days.Someone make me feel better :'( :'(

If you go to your job on a dodgy day and get rained on half way through what would you do and what would you say to the customers .cos lets face it if i wait for a real good day i could be in for a long wait.

A friend of mine used to do valeting and found the same problem, this time of year it was hard to polish anything because it wouldnt go off enough to be worked, getting upholstery dry was a nightmare as well.

In the end he took on the work of a smallish forecourt through the winter as the owner had a lockup he could use to do his stock in, and when there wasn't any stock to be cleaned he could use it for customers cars (think he used to give him a fiver a car that he used it for), during the summer he would employ someone to do the garage work while he was doing mobile, Andy

Shiner

I have been valeting for a couple of years now, and the old saying make hay while the sun shines springs to mind.
I operate over 7 days and take these wet days off to catch up on paperwork or just to chill out
I have a canopy which i use  on a number of business parks and i have asked customers to assist to put up.

Once your up and running you will be glad of the rain - just to get some time off.
Dont limit yourself just to valeting
I have also moved into the restoration of blockpaving- patios -drives etc and carry out alot of the wet work on these rainy days.
Winter days are short and the summer days long, i tend to operate on the business parks during the day and allocate my household business to the evenings in the summer

Dont panic

Regards

Billy

Well thankyou for making me feel a whole lot better.Just to answer my previuse question how do you cancel at short notice when bad weather strikes and manage to still look professional. I suppose its not a problem when the customers are flexible.Thing is most people arent.

Mr Shiner,

Why dont you get yourself a small gazebo that you can put up, I see them around where I work and also dont forget the 'Chipsaway' boys use them outside peoples houses and its a cracking way to advertise.

It must work because I noticed it. Easy innit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
