Went to USA last week and saw this. It was the only decent day during the whole week, the rest of the time was blowing a gale.

Not a job I would fancy

ERR exactly how they are supposed to help!!!

Do you not think there might just be a bit of wind up there, swaying the cleaner on the rope for example, would of thought a helmet would be a must!
And everyone wears high vis vests for everything now adays!

How would a helmt help? I think it may just break your fall from up there.

I always have a laugh when you see people wearing hard hats on a construction site when the only thing above them is 10 tonne steel girders hanging from a crane.

Think if you go onto 99% of construction sites, there will be a few more things that can drop on your head than just 10 tonne steel girders, thats why on probably 99.9% of construction sites everyone wears a HELMET!

Oh yeah, they look like the suckers you get on some conservatory ladders, CRAP! Even with these i would still of thought  they would be wearing hard hats just as a rule for the conditions and the job they are doing!

Is any of the guys online who do abseiling work, what do you guys wear and are there any statutory rules and regs for work wear , either from hse or insurance?

Jase. i do abseiling in the US,Not sure how big the one in the pic is but we do a few above 30 floors, There is no rule about wearing a hard hat and to be honest I dont think anyone ever even considered it
The suction cups they are using are standard and will hold you in position even when you pull against it with all you got, there is a quick release bar on the handle to release from the glass
In the only close up photo it appears that the guy is not wearing a safety harness or lanyard which is a big no-no and although they are running 2 lines a life line and a work line they both appear to be running thru their abseiling device which used to be ok but not anymore
Colin was the bank actually in NEw Jersey or was it somewhere else as at this time of year in the north east its just too cold to do that kind of work

I do a bit of that work myself,... on a much smaller scale, a lot closer to the ground.

Lads,.. on the helmet issue,.. it might seem a bit silly wearing a helmet up there, but a helmet will save you if you are caught by a gust of wind loose you balance, and get thrown against the building head first, which can happen very easily when you're swinging on the end of 100' of rope!
Also, their gear should be secured by a light rope to their harness,.. for the safety of pedestrians walking below.
And,.. it could just be me, but I can only see 1 rope? I can see a reflection on the glass which looks like a second rope at a glance. NEVER EVER attempt this kind of work without an active safety rope!!

It's great money if you can get the work though!
