AARRGGHH!!!
« on: March 01, 2007, 11:00:42 pm »
As Squeaky has mentioned....sigh, I had a teensy mishap today :'(

As you all know, Rog is really crocked at the moment and he's realised (I think) that if he is to continue in window cleaning, to reduce the chances of him continually re-injuring himself he is going to have to bite the bullet and go WFP....

So he called by as I was working to see just exactly how light this newfangled carbon fibre pole was, and of course to ask a few questions with regards WFP.

So I went along to a nice, straightforward semi that was due, he saw how easy it was to 'reel' out 30m of microbore hose, how simple it was to get underway and so on.
I did the back of the house and demonstrated how the average 3 pane UPVC window takes 30 seconds to clean, including the frames.

All went well, did the front and while there Rog had a go on an upstairs window, not really to clean it, more to get a feel of what the pole felt like in use...
Anyway, I finished off the front while yaking away to Squeaks, slapped the invoice in the letterbox (my new residential invoices with details on there for those who wish to pay via online banking ;) Gonna be interested to see how effective that is too) and I put everything away in the van and we sat there discussing WFP and work in general for a good 30 or 40 minutes.

Looked at the time...spit! almost 12:20pm! I had to be somwhere at 12:30!! :o

"Tell you what Rog, those windows should have mostly dried by now, lets check the results so you can see just how good a job WFP can do!"

........Sigh :-[

Back windows were drying out fine, side windows were good too..but the bloody front ones had dried out covered in spots!! >:(

My fault entirely, plus it was also very windy, combination of factors, still, had to re-clean them so I quickly reel out hose & pole, now I'm in a hurry so after cleaning the two upstairs windows, and because the pole is so light, I don't bother popping off the top section to clean the two downstairs windows.

so from a distance I am vigorously scrubbing the window and........SNAP! The top section of the pole breaks completely in half :'( :'( :'(

Sigh..... :-[

So a strong word of caution to all of you that go for the ultra-lightweight poles....only use the sections you need to use!!

If you have 18ft of pole extended and you are scrubbing away at a downstairs window, although the force exerted at the brush is comparively light, the pressure on the centre of the pole is considerable, these poles are amazingly rigid, but they are also relatively fragile.
Used correctly you won't have a problem, try and be a smart-arse and you most definitely WILL have a problem...

However...A phone call to Gardiners sorted me out, they are posting my a new top section in the morning, which means that on Monday I'll be back in the groove....my wallet will be £60 lighter but I'll be back in the groove..sigh :-\

Ian I feel for you mate  :'(

Been there done that, not exactly the same way, but fell the pain all the same. I'm now on my fourth top section after 6 months... :o :o  :'( :'( Think I've learnt my lesson though, here's a checklist of do nots:

1. DO NOT push on a stiff window to try a close it!

2. DO NOT leave your pole on the roof of your van, forget to strap it down, drive home, then go out later on, still totally none the wiser, and stare in blind panic as you hear it lifting off the roof, and see it flayling about it the rear view mirror! :o (fortunately the hose was shut in the back door so no drivers were at risk)

3. DO NOT leave it on the ground, then come back to it loose your footing, trip and put your bloody size elevens in the middle of it! :o

BECAUSE all of the above result in replacements being required, and a hole in the wallet!!

I want to order a supalight specifically to reach over large conservatories and get to the windows above. I have been told that they are fine to use at this angle (not very vertical). Those of you who have them what are your opinions? Would there be any advantage in using say a carbon Facelift? I already have a glassfibre pole that will reach but I hate the weight and bend of it at low angles.

My home made one is still going strong, but I can sort of sense when not to push to hard. But if I tread on it or something, then it is done for....

Why are people buying poles which are not designed to be used to clean windows and snap so easily? insanity!!
