Quoting on a job where the customer has said the dog has weed 'here and there' on the carpet.

I have some craftex neutraliser but was wondering, do I have to prespray with it, then rinse, then do the whole carpet again to clean? Could I prespray with microsplit, aggitate, then extract the lot.

Need to know for quote, at this state don't know how bad the carpet is generally, customer said it was ok, just a bit smelly.

Usual instructions for this type of product, is to apply fairly liberally and give at least 10 - 15 minutes dwell, before rinsing out.

It would be best to clean, at least a couple of feet around, feathering out, but best to clean the whole area.

There are absorbant powders, which have been around for many years, that do an excellent job without the possibility of wetting problems.

Urine can sometimes go through the carpet and into the underlay...... warn your customer of this just to cover yourself, treating just the carpet isn`t always the answer but it is the first step, Geoff

Quoted and got this job.

Chap breds spaniel type things. No visible signs on a red carpet, only slight pong, reckons could have done it anywhere though and been down 2-3 years.

Said I would have to neutralise whole carpet, extract, then clean again.

He was ok with this and I got him to initial against potential probs on job sheet.

Surely something like m-power would of done the job as it breaks down odours etc anyway would of been quicker and less cost affective i would of thought mate

I think the guy wants as good a job as is possible. As mensioned, it may even require lifting the carpet and using enzymes and such. It's fine by me cos I'm charging nearly double what a quick m power clean would cost.

A quick clean is unlikely to solve this problem...........I have always used enzymatic products in such a situation and got good results, but I believe the dry absorbing powder would get a better result.

I take it you can only treat the backing of a carpet if its ok to do this for example if it was a wilton/axminster or jute backed carpet etc how would you go about it then?

When dealing with urine it is imperative that all affected surfaces are treated. We even had one where we had to cut out floorboards and remove some of the soil from the sub floor. This was extreme and caused by an Alsation being left alone all day for god knows how long.
Urine produces Uric salts. These salts are hygrophopic which means they absorb moisture from the atmosphere. This moisture causes the salts to off gas ammonia and other gases.
To deal with it and for any odour producing contaminant the first rule is to extract as much of the waste as possible. This gives you a good start to treat any minor residues.
Apply urine neutraliser, allow to dwell then extract off, it is best to do this 2 or 3 times. Apply a final spray of neutraliser or deodouriser and leave to dry.
It is advisable if possible to treat the back of the carpet and floor the same way.
This can be done on woven carpets as long as the contaminated areas are not too large. If it is widespread then you would need to advise the customer of possible shrinkage.

lol cutting out floorboards crikey that doesnt come into carpet cleaning surely. I wouldn't feel to comfortable wetting the backing of a woven carpet its bad enough wetting the pile side  sometimes abit of a brown pants moment for me as not as experienced as some on here, Saying that just the other day i had a job to do through a friend, 2 out of the 3 carpets she wanted cleaning were axminsters with one of them i was surprised how much water i could actually put on one and came up well but with the other one had to be very careful as it wasn't fitted the best and it had joins in which was nice!!!!

As I said this was an extreme case and we were called in by an Insurance company after other contractors had failed to remedy the odour problem. The house had been reposessed and this Alsation had been urinating in the same corner for months. Good earner, simple to do.

Regarding over wetting Axminsters, we did a hotel flood 6 weeks ago. Hotel and conference centre, All the carpets were either wool Axminsters or Wiltons. The place was swimming in water. Estimated replacement cost 100k.
None of the carpets required replacement although a few seams and lengths had to be power stretched back.
