yesterday i cleaned this window and there was a scratch on the window , it kind of went across the glass ..and I think i had only worked down the glass ... i told the owner so she new in future it wasnt me .... but when i cleaned out my bucket there was a bit of sand in the bottom .....could this of scratched  the glass .... no other windows appeared scratched that day ........... ps any tips for avoiding this would be appreciated

Be careful not to put your cloths down anywhere  where they can pick up grit. Sand in particular sticks to a wet cloth and scratches glass.
A belt with loops to hold a couple of scrim cloths is a good idea.

Also don't use sill cloth on glass. The rendering above any window or sand and cement from between the bricks is always breaking down slowly releasing individual grains of sand which land on the sill and gets picked up when you wipe the sill.
You don't even notice it but it happens. Look on the ground near any pebble dashed wall and you will see where stones from the pebble dashing have fallen down and are lying on the ground.Sand from the wall has done the same but you can't see it

as a trad window cleaner ... do you take one bucket of water and be very carefull with it ?

I used to take 5l containers of water that had had vinegar in. I had all the oblong buckets holstersetc but my favourite was one of thos tidy things that would fit the applicator in and about two  inches of water in. I used very little water but kept it clean and changed it often aas well as cleaning the applicator.

yeah i am begining to warm to getting a BOAB but i dont like having wet trouser leg ....cant win em all
anyway im on holiday this week .... just going to relax

If you get a BOAB, I'd recommend the Pulex Tubex, hangs down much better than the unger buckets (well so I think anyway).

With a BOAB you don't need to get a wet leg!
A good dunk with your aplicator in your bucket, and then into your BOAB is usually enough to do a complete semi with.

you are highly unlikely to scratch glass, if you pick up something abrasive enough to scratch glass with your applicator you can usually feel it in an instant, in 23 years of window cleaning I have personally not had it happen to me, ditto with a scrim or microfibre too.

I did have a customer complaim that one of the guys working for me had scratched her windows though!
Complete cobblers...there were all manner of scratches all over the shop, gave her the equipment the guys were using and challenged her to try and scratch the glass, she couldn't of course, then she tried to say it was their belt buckles and their watches that were causing the scratches!!

Threatened me with court action too, I just laughed at her and walked away...silly mare...

It is highly unlikely that you scratched the glass.  Almost impossible, if you used a soapy water.  Usually what happens is that you wash the glass cleaner than it has been for years and th client looks closer at their glass than they ever have to discover scratches that have been there for years!
I have been cleaning windows for 20 years and have never scratched glass!
