Interesting to see that already well over a third do not have a web presence,
Web sites are your on line brochure open 24/7 unless you have critical mass and don't need any more clients (lucky you) a site is something you must all be looking into at some point in the future.
I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination and constantly seek help and advice on the subject but what I have learnt is 'page rank' is very important.
Google operate a page ranking system based on a logarithmic scale its very hard to climb up the rank and the vast majority will not have any rank at all, for instance googles rank is 8,Virgins new site is 0 but I don't suppose Richard's bothered that much

. within a matter of weeks Virgin will be right up there of course.
So google does not distinquish between huge multi nationals and one man opeartors when it comes to page rank, its all about content and links.
Incidently on their brand new site the strap line says, 'This is not a home page its a front door, open it and walk in'... superb

The higher the ranking the further afield your page will be advertised on google content sites, for instance Yahoo MS ASK etc so more presence is achieved.
Hits are not the be all and end all, for instance my site had 91000 hits last month alone, its visits and pages that count. If some one visits then that means they sought you out and walked in the 'front door', this is where your enquiries will come from.
But only if ,once they are in, your site is interesting.
Remember 1 click and your history so keep them there for as long as possible.
Most importantly when building the site and placing copy, you
must remember that the site is for potential clients and interested parties
not for the benefit of other carpet cleaners, so aim your pages to market at customers and not cleaners.
