never mind a frozen van!!!
« on: February 07, 2007, 05:46:15 pm »
got pole and trolley in last night so no worries there. ;D Went to first house, big georgian. and thought should be ok here cos heat will be on the glass although secondary glazed. Wrong!! all front winsdows froze!!  Water when hitting ground was freezing instantly. Water dripping on downstairs windows froze. Water running down the walls was frezzing! Dunno how it dried up ! But cos it rinsed before freezing should be ok.
But how on earth do you wfp guys manage. Its alright once in a blue moon on a big house. But during a long hard winter where its that cold for weeks and your on an estate with water going all over foot paths etc and freezing, surely it cant be done.

Ive trad cleaned for 19 yrs and always start my first house at 8am even when below freezing but with wfp its not gonna work. Never have i stopped cos of the cold but when the round is over to wfp how can i work.

I start later (9:30/10) and finish at 3:30/4, working through lunch.

Seems to be working.

Tomorrows predicted weather - that's another story - Day off I think!

With trad I just used to put screenwash in the bucket with the water.  With WFP, even if it's a very cold day, it's unusual not to be able to work even if you end up starting at 10 or 11 am when the temperature has climbed a bit.  Even just doing a 4 - 5 hour day can often supply a turnover which is the equivalent of 7 hours trad.  Mind you I live in the southeast so I'm probably usually a bit better off with temperature than those who are further north.
I suppose if it got really bad for too long I'd have to get the ladder out and use screenwash again.  I dread the thought but it's better than no income.

As for water freezing on the ground, I do carry rock salt around in Winter.  Also, I have a floor squeegee and spray bottle containing an alcohol based solution to stop pathways freezing.

All you needed was some rock-salt and you could've carried on.
It's a game of three halves!

Hi all.

When its this cold, if you are trad try putting antifreeze in your bucket, then when you do those porches & cons that have no heat in them, the water wont freeze on the glass  ;)

I don't know if it's a different chamical or just more diluted but I understand that, with cars, antifreeze can damage paintwork but screenwash doesn't.  Therefore, when I put a chemical in the bucket to stop water freezing, I use screenwash rather than antifreeze - just in case.  Antifreeze may be perfectly OK but I don't risk it.
