Felt Backed Carpet
« on: July 25, 2004, 02:39:07 pm »
Hi Guys ,

Had a call from my aunt in Eastbourne about her daughters carpets.

These have recently got a bit messed up due to a wedding although not too bad aparently.

She has had two carpet cleaners round who have said they c'ant clean them because they are felt backed and they would ruckle.

I certainly havent come across this and I clean all types of carpet.

Is this a new phenomenom or are they just being wimps? ;)

I would be interested in any comments.

Cheers.

Hi Doug,

I have cleaned many felt-back carpets without problems, but have heard that they tend to suffer 'rippleing' if over wetted and have heard of a few that have taken several days to settle back.

The main 'problem' I encounter with these is a tendancy to form stretch wrinkles at spin-points - though not a cleaning problem, they do no need to be pointed out and explained prior to cleaning.

Sounds like you may be in for a trip down the coast  ;)

John.

Hi John,

I really do not have the time so if there is anyone near Eastbourne send me a pm.

Cheers,

Doug

I have a rented property with felt backed carpets throughout (even the HSL!),  They were so cheap I only expected them to last a year or two at best.

Earlier this year a family (with kids) moved out and the carpets were absolute filth.

A thorough vacuuming, Solutions (No. 2 I think) aggitated with a Duo and then extraction with water at about 65 degrees and they came up an absolute treat.

Biggest problem is the flattened pile which despite the Duo'ing didn't improve much.

If rippling is likely, bonnetting might be the answer. Better than not cleaning at all.

Cleaned my first felt backed carpet a couple of weeks ago.

Absolutely filthy, so used m/splitter & agitated with host m/c

Came up a treat,  but rippled like hell!!   Told client it would go down in a couple of days.  I hope it did !!

Suggest Solutions No2 and Charly pads.
Leave it as dry as possible :o
