It must be this area, I have had two in the last week asking exactly the same, I just tell them that our marketing budget has already been allocated for the year and if they could send me written details and a previous copy of their brochure then I will look at it when the budget comes up for review.

Yet to receive any of the promised letters or brochures

Most of these conmen are based over the North West, Manchester and Liverpool. A number of them have been prosecuted in the past but they keep on going. They target specific areas at a time, its easier to read off the blurb if they are saying the same police force/fire brigade etc.

I had one yesturday, You advertised in a drugs awearness magazine going out to Schools in your local area, last October.

We are now collecting payment for this and can I speak to your accounts department.

They pray on the fact that you are a company with an accounts department that will just pay it.

As soon as I say no it just me they normally hang up.

I had those drugs people call our company too saying they had spoken to us in April and we had agreed to spending £400 on a book that was all printed and reasdy to go to the local schools. I knew no-one in this office had authorised it! Made me feel bad though cos i thought they had made a genuine mistake and as they were a charity we agreed to give £50 as a nice gesture but refused to pay any more. I wondered why they were so happy about that... b******s!

wont fall for that one again!!!

By the way, I'm from the south of the country and we get those calls too, so its not just you Northerners!!

Re a previous post of mine.
They are usually from the Morecombe area of Lancashire, they tried to get me by saying they were from Herts Police Brass Band, as I know a filth or two I asked and was told there is no such thing.

Passed the details on and they were warned off.

Low and behold I had a call from someone in the same area a while later regarding a callendar for the Fire Brigade. So I passed details on again and never been bothered since.

As the earlier  post allways ask for a few previous copies of what they are selling. That way you are usually sure they have some credability.

Another outfit to look out for is one that claims it is working in conjunction with the Watchdog program.

Regardless if they are legit or what don't waste your money. This kind of advertising just does not work.

Its not just up North .we have them down south as well they say they spoke to the company 6 months ago and someone authorised it, thats when I twigged I'm a sole trader!!! then they ask how it would be paid I knew i hadn't authorised anything so had no hesitation in saying tough s--t. this has happened a few times. I make a rule never pay anything out on the phone. And its  a good idea to ask for there address & phone no so you can check them out.

Had several similar calls in the past but none recently.
ones to watch out for are books for schools/local hospital/royal greenjackets/fire service/wall calendars, and anyone that asks to speak to the business owner.

Dont forget the ones that are helping the poor kids in your area suffering from cancer and lukemia. If you turn these down they get real nasty.

Why would a health care trust with a budget of hundreds of millions of pounds want to pay someone to pester us for a clarty few quid. They wouldn't.

Bill,we fell for that one in the early days, except down here it is a different Health Authority, they are trying it on all over the country and must be raking it in.
Believe it or not the books do exist but only a handful chucked on the rest room table and not tens of thousands like they promise, and certainly not handed out with payslips.
The government should step in and stop this deception,it is nothing but fraud.
The royal greenjackets even threatened to take me to court for not honouring a ficticious pledge.
