I bought my main established round but ive done a fair bit of canvassing over the years so i think its important to do a bit of both.

I sold and got a good price for all my underpriced and c**p work last year  ;) but this window cleaner had hardly got any work so it suited him but i also gave him a lot of work.

Just try and keep your work compact and your prices good

mine bought and paid for, then expanded through natural evolution.

Only ever picked up 1 job through canvassing

My massive round of 82 accounts has been gained by leaflets and now I am noticing a few more by word of mouth....I have another 7.5 thousand leaflets to go out..

Cheers
Dave.

I started from scratch in March 06.

Leaflet dropped, door knocked and ran 3 x monthly ads in a local 'parish type' magazine.

I would say I'm at full capacity now.  Getting ready to streamline things a bit.

Hi Steve

How many jobs did them Parish mags bring in.  Been thinking of them myself but never got round to it?

Distribution was to 2500 homes.  10 enquiries 1st month (9 became customers), 8 enquiries 2nd month (6 became customers) and 6 enquiries in the 3rd month (all 6 became customers).    A further 7 have mentioned the advert some months afterwards.  Resulted in a mixture of window cleaning & conservatory work.

The good thing was that they were all local due to the distribution area and I have had recommendations by some of these customers since.  So definitely worth the money.

Yellow Pages, word of mouth, being stopped in the street, folk see the phone number on the van.

so you never canvassed, leafleted or bought anything Davie?  It is pretty unusual to start with yellow pages only.

I started by someone watching me clean my own windows and them asking me to do their's.

They recomended me to someone else who also knew someone who wanted their windows cleaned.

I canvassed for about 2 months, put an advert in the local Post Office.

Advertised on side of car and most work was coming from word of mouth.

Within about 3 months i had enough work to give my job up and go on my own.

Another 3 months and was able to buy a van and get it signwritten.

Not looked for work for about a year now as it just keeps coming in.

I do have an ad in the Yellow pages which brings work in.

I started May 98

I got a contract to clean an holiday camp, so i turned up with a bucket and sponge lol (thats another story)

In Dec 98 I bought a round for £500 which was £250 worth of work a month.
The prices werent too bad , but the round was in a very affluent area and quite compact.

then later in Aug 99 , I bought another round for £3000 which was for £1422 a month of work. Included in this round was again lots of compact rich work , todays terms £400'000 - £2 million houses and a lot of commercial work.

These 2  rounds now consist of about 300 jobs which is well in excess of £50'000 worth of work per annum.

See not a bad return on the initial £3500 investment.

I have now started 2 more rounds consisting entirely of commercial and high end residential, which is just evolving on its own accord.

Had i just canvassed i know i would of never picked up this qaulity work.

I may sell the above  rounds soon, but its hard to put a price on them, there is no way i will just sell them for 2 times monthly take, maybe if i combine them with a cleaning company they may well sell for many times more.

Canvased all my work at the start, then built it on recommendations and just being seen in areas.
