business name
« on: January 17, 2007, 02:33:43 pm »
hi all,

I decided on my business name I while ago and did searches on YELL.com.  I found over 100 "near matches" which was not good really!

However there is only one that has a direct match and that is in renfrewshire - miles away from me in Yorkshire.

I was looking for your input really on whether or not I will be getting myself into hot water.  I have been on companies house website and again there are very similar matches.

I don't want to get a good name for myself and spend money on documentation - only to have to change it later on. I'm in a better position for doing something about it now - however I really like the name as I think it gives out a good impression - it's just not as unique as I would like it to be

The name I chose is Sparkles Domestic Cleaning Services.

Cheers guys

Angela - I think you might be right about being cautious. If a company name is already registered at companies house i'm pretty sure you can't register another of the same name. I could be wrong.

The best people to ask would be your accountant as ours seems to know everything about everything or someone from Companies house or possibly the FSB?

Good luck either way

Depends to on if the original company was happy you using similar name to theirs while you were self employed.
The problems occur when you form a limited business. If another company is registered already with the same name, you would have to change it. You may as well start off using different name to begin with, may be easier all round.
Besides, Sparkles Domestic Cleaning Services may be in Yorkshire.....but they may well be crap and have a bad name......may think you were from the same outfit!!!

Have fun   ;D

imo its better to find something that doesnt sound similar to anything else in your area, so as not too cause confusion and a potential customer going elsewhere instead of you cos they got the name wrong.

Also you aren't likely to get hassles from the other company.........take it from me it is more trouble than its worth, as it happened to me 15 yrs back when i ran my own CV and word processing service and chose a name being used by an employment  agency............i changed my name pronto but it cost me a fortune in printing and advertising costs :(
anyone with facebook can add me at this link ...  jan 'minkeedj' kindon  .... if you can be bothered lol

Angela,

Go to The National Business Registery at  www.start.biz

Type in the name you would like, and check to see if anyone has registered it.

If not, then it's yours for £90 per year.

Once you have registered it, no-one else can use that name legally.

Yours obligingly,

Samuel

thanks samuel and everyone.

Funny story:  I am staying at my mother in law's in leeds and I came in last night and found "sparkling clean domestic cleaners" through the letter post.

IT'S A SIGN - DON'T USE THAT NAME!!!

So about 1/2 hr later, I had an enlightening moment, and I have now got my new name.

I have checked on start.biz and companies house - and I am good to go.  Will be registering the name next week.

so thanks for the sound advice guys

Whooa,

I should tell ya I have a cracking book called "Good Small Business Guide"  by Richard Reed.  It does not tell you everything in detail about everything but its very good for doing some fast research.  The following is for Private Limited Companies.  Generally if it isn't a private limited company you do not register with anyone except maybe a telephone directory.

the fee for registering a private company is currently 20 quid. (it may have changed since the book was written)

You need to send the following documents to the Registrar of Companies (copmnies house)

Memorandum of Association  (purpose of the company)

Articles of Asscociation (rights of share holders and powers of directors)
can be altered later

Form 10 (statement of first directors, secretary and registered office) downloadable from companies house

Form 12 (Declaration of Compliance with requirements of Companies Act) downloadable from companies house

You cannot plough a field by turning it over in your mind.

ok...it's Heaven Scent Domestic Cleaning.

There is a Heaven Scent Cleaning Services but they are way down near London (I don't think I will be covering down there!!)

There are none in my area at all.

What do you think?

Ange

Are you going to the cleaning show this year Tim?

yes all booked.  Going to the business start up show too - anything for a day out!  ;D

most likely to be the Tuesday.  It depends on work cos I will probably be part time then (need to keep the money rolling in whilst I get established)

Go for Angies Angels , or Angies Angels domestic cleaning services.

I cannot find anyone in your neck of the woods using these.

Think Angies Angels Domestic Cleaning Services is a bit of a mouthful.

Angies Angels is Ok   ;D

.....although you would have the Office Angels in your head and think Angies Angels was a recruitment agancy.....so market that one in the right way and it would go down well.

Heaven Scent Domestic Cleaning....you could do a lot with that one too. Logo, clean smells, angel to your rescue.....list goes on and on   8)
