yep, never touch the top frame, use the best brush you can afford ( rectangular with pencil jets) and rinse well.
there you go, next time they'll be perfect.

if you must, then you must i'm afraid. to me it's the biggest cause of problems with wfp. i never tell the customer that i'll clean the top frame, never even mention it. having said that i've never been asked to in 3 years wfp. you're just setting yourself up for runs, spots etc, to me its just giving yourself unnesesary hassle. however you must be accurate to do this, you will need the tools as said before and only clean up to the top of the glass, just let the bristles touch the beading at the top and rinse brush on. fan jets tend to spray a little water above the brush thats why its best done with pencil jets.

Can i butt in here , if you do the top of the frame first time round then it will not cause you a problem again in the future , ok first cleans will take longer but when its done its done ......SCRUB SCRUB , RINSE RINSE RINSE

Have to agree with Rich & its industry standard to clean the top of the frame WHY! well how close is close to a very dirty top frame before it bleeds dirt on to the glass below!!

Sometimes on really soiled windows/frames on a first clean we have to reclean after they dry in order to get the top frame really clean.  This way we can get it right the first time.

And there is nothing wrong with fan jets either!
You will find that whichever type you use, you will get used to them, I use fan jets and wouldn't have it any other way.
And I also do the tops of the frames as a matter of course, but first time around you must be very thorough though, as Rich says; .SCRUB SCRUB , RINSE RINSE RINSE!!
Go over the top windows like this, then when you have done, go back to the first one and clean again, just doing the glass this time.
On subsequent cleans it should be a simple thing to keep on top of.

Of course, if you have frames that have oxidised then that is a different ball game
I would still wash everything down on the first clean, and I'd make sure that I scrub the frames very intensely, in particular where frame meets pane!
Do several windows, thereby allowing the windows to dry out a little and then go back over them doing just the glass, and on subsequent cleans just do the glass and sills.

Ultimately it is all about the learning curve, the more you learn, the better you will (or should!) get.

if you really do want to make your life harder & work take longer then do as the posts above, but if like me your very accurate & skillfull and dont want to risk any runs, get home early, have less hassle in your life, use less water, be quicker on first cleans, not spend all day scrubbing then going back to check there's no drips from vents etc. then just do as i say. its a bit of a no brainer me thinks.

i too do all the frames 1st cleans are a pain in the bum i just keep rinsing till all the dirty water has stopped then do windows then do them again,after 1st clean i only give the top frame a quick rub over with damp brush them rinse as normal, then by the time i have washed the glass the top frame has stopped dripping then i rinse with fan jets if the window does not dry from the top frame i turn my fan jets down to be a pencil jet then cut in with them like this, then turn water back up & rinse all rest of glass with fan on full flow,

If you don't clean the top frames on the 1st clean then you will run the chance of having problems each time you clean these windows.
Unless your a top notch marksman like macmac , you might catch the frame each time you clean them causing the dirt to run down the window.
I clean the whole frames each time i clean the window and haven't had a complaint yet. From that i can only assume everything has come up ok.
The more they are done the better and easier they can be cleaned each visit. You won't have to worry about trying too aim away from the dirty top frame.

I'm always in 2 minds as to clean the top frames and/or vents, I do them on first cleans then think I'll leave them on future cleans, but usually end up going over them anyway and like Craig, haven't had complaint yet.
I find  large windows with 2 top openers can be more of a problem with drips channelling between them and right down the center of the bottom glass.

I ALWAYS clean the top frame on EVERY clean!

If you do and then rinse properly you shouldn't get any problems.
