And there is nothing wrong with fan jets either!
You will find that whichever type you use, you will get used to them, I use fan jets and wouldn't have it any other way.
And I also do the tops of the frames as a matter of course, but first time around you must be very thorough though, as Rich says; .SCRUB SCRUB , RINSE RINSE RINSE!!
Go over the top windows like this, then when you have done, go back to the first one and clean again, just doing the glass this time.
On subsequent cleans it should be a simple thing to keep on top of.
Of course, if you have frames that have oxidised then that is a different ball game

I would still wash everything down on the first clean, and I'd make sure that I scrub the frames very intensely, in particular where frame meets pane!
Do several windows, thereby allowing the windows to dry out a little and then go back over them doing just the glass, and on subsequent cleans just do the glass and sills.
Ultimately it is all about the learning curve, the more you learn, the better you will (or should!) get.
