There are a lot of problems with the gear boxes going in the trafic/vivaro van, sell on value is also less.

The newer shape transits are good solid vans and would be my choice

Shawn,

This is a good site in finding what the van is worth, I use this and will not pay a penny more. Reason if you buy a van for £6k and is written off through no fault of your own you will only pe paid for what it's worth and not what you paid. So if it is only worth £4k you will only get £4k for your insurance.

I learnt the hard way and I make sure it will never happen again.

I've got a 51 plate transit mwb med. roof. On average get about 90 miles for a tenner.
Great van to drive - really comfy.
Advantage of the med. roof is that i can fit all my poles and even a set of ladders, when needed, inside the van.

Any van will depreciate the moment you buy it and any dealer will add a percentage on.

You have got a good price. I run two transit conect swbs 55 reg and a mwb 01 reg. All good vans and parts not too dear.

The gearbox in my Trafic had to be replaced aound 39,000 miles.  I know of someone else who had to replace his around 65,000 miles.  I will be keeping my Trafic until Autumn 2010 when the loan will be paid up (didn't buy it from new) by which time it will have done 90,000 - 95,000 miles and be nearing 8 years old.  I doubt I would buy another because I just don't trust them after what happened to me although I may just have got unlucky.  It's a pity because they are lovely to drive for a van but I would rather have something that sounds and feels like a diesel van so long as I could rely on it.  It may just be that I had a bad one with the first gearbox and that the replacement will be fine.
I just googled and found this.
It may or may not be typical      http://www.reviewcentre.com/review193426.html

Shawn,

If it's off a dealer then haggle the price, never accept the first price. Often enough you will get about £500 knocked off if you have cash.

Hi Shawn

We use a Toyota Hiace, excellent if you can find one usually pricey though, would be my first choice if i was looking.

I initially leased gt it from acornfinance £169.00 3 years which is cheap, then purchases for less than £5k end lease, 30,000 miles bargain.

In the long run i saved thousands.

Good Luck
