Finished reading Peter Kay book today, that I got for christmas, so was forced to start on Jeremy Clarksons book, which is simply a printout of every colmumn he wrote in the sunday times in 2004, 
A few pages in he claims that a scottish person invented carpet cleaning, can anyone confirm this,and who was the Scottish person?

But I think this is the first inventor of the formidable TRUCK MOUNT

In 1901, Hubert Cecil Booth came up with the idea of sucking up the dirt through a filter. He built a machine that worked well, but was so big it had to be parked outside customers’ houses. He was frequently sued as the noise often frightened passing horses.

A bloke called "McGaffney" patented a "sweeping machine" to clean rugs. It was a hand-pumped device made of wood and canvas called the "Whirlwind".  As he had "Mc" in his name he was probably scottish!

The vacuum cleaner was invented by someone called "Booth" who I believe was also Scottish. It was a large petrol driven device mounted on a horse cart so I suppose it was the first truck mount!

A few years later an American came along (Spangler) and produced the first electric portable cleaner.

Booth was English born in Gloucester (name of my avenue two great cc together :)


Booth directed the erection of the Connel Ferry Bridge over Loch Etive, Scotland

Never heard about this and wonder what stage of carpet cleaning is being referred to. Prior to fitted carpets rugs were hung on ropes and beaten to release dry soiling.

I met an old lady a couple of years ago, who used carbolic soap on her carpets for around 60 years. The Argosheen company in Mid America were first to use mechanised bonnet mopping around the mid 1940's

The Glorious 12th is when the betters are out! I take it to be maniacal in some respects, bit of the subject, had look at Argosheen site very informative, testimonials outstanding and there product dose not appear to be over here, never mind.

I have used the product and found it to be excellent, but a pain to import. If I were not backing out of c/c I would probably still import it.

There's a debate elsewhere, about a ban on hot water cleaning in the US which will find it's way accross to the UK .

This is one of the attractions of Argosheen, as it is very effective with cold water, as several other products are.
