Is it worth it!
« on: December 12, 2006, 10:03:24 pm »
I don't post often any more, but today has taken the biscuit!

I have been working my butt off for the best part of 4 years trying to get this business stable and just when I thought things were panning out nicely, I lose a load of customers and 2 cleaners  :(

Right on top of Xmas and New Year is a really bad time for this to happen, especially as I constantly struggle to get good staff and don't even think I have enough available shifts with the rest of my girls to dish the cleans out between em (tho I will have a good go). Probably have to upset a few customers by shifting the day of their clean but hey, i will lose them anyway if I can't place them witho anyone!

This right on top of my constant struggle with my (now ex) mobile phone suppliers who cocked my contract up and overcharged me for a year resulting in long and expensive phone calls each month, and then to top it all they cancelled my contract so now my number in Yellow Pages is not contactable on anyway  :'(

I mean how much worse can it get..........i will be out of business before you can say Done 'n' Dusted, who are they, if it carries on like this.............dont you just hate staff sometimes..............

ok so I am not averse to a bit of cleaning myself, but right now is not a good time for gawds sake, it'll be the school hols in a bit and the kids will be home.....hmmmmm wonder how much i can legally get them to do lol :)

anyway my 14 yr old daughter said she wants a job so she can work with me lol

presently I am frustrated, stressed, peed off and very, very tired with a rampant headache..like I said is it all really worth it :(

Hi Jan

It's called fire fighting lol!  Alot of that is done in this business.  Just think about the buzz you will get when it's all sorted, there wouldn't be any highs without the lows!

Of course it's worth it!

yep you are right there Fox, I spent half the evening trying to jiggle the shifts around and will be doing some myself and strangely enough I am looking forward to it, after all the cleaning is the easy bit, its the rest of it that can cause the hassles  ;)

Hi jan

Depends on how you feel about your business and business in general?

Sometimes it doesn't just rain in this buiness it absolutely throws down but that is business in general as well. Everyhting happens at once, one way through is too register with an agency? not the ideal solution but as a tempory measure it can help you out of a sticky spot, especially around this time of year.

for me summer was insane, spent 6 month doing 96 hours a week on average, looking back on it it was a huge amount of work but at the time I just got on with it. Usual issues to deal with as well, staff, family, life.

If things stayed the same, I guess life would be dull.

See you on the other side!

Regards

Hi Jan,

Don't worry, look on the brightside xmas is nearly here and you wil get a chance to clear your head a bit.

I went through a rough time during about 2 / 3 month ago and had quite a fe clients let me down, I was really despondant. But you told me then that things would work themselevs out , and gues what they did, you were right mate!!

Looking back in the past, you ask a friend if yours to e-mail me with some words of support, have a look at those, and cheer up.

About your mobile, have you thought o using another service provider and takingthat number with you, I.m not sure how it works but I know a few people that I have done it.

Keep yor pecker up love,

have a good evening, all will turn out well, I promise you!!!

Contact your mobile service provider (ex) and ask for the Port Number, they must provide it. Then contact another Service provider and tell them you wish to port your old number across to them on a contract.

Did your ex servive provider give you notice? They are regulated, if you have query contact ofcom for advice.

its a long story and i don't wish to bore you with it but i requested i be let out of the contract early cos they messed up right from the word go and after 12 months hadn't sorted it (i still had 6 months to go), but they cancelled it before i had a chance to tell them when, its finished now and i can live with it till the new year when the new yp book comes out.............

Hi Jan
I read your post and I can honestly say that I know how you feel, 3yrs ago cleaner that I thought highly of pinched 6 of my best customers and took 2 other cleaners with her, I was going to jack it all in, I felt I couldnt trust anyone again, but I found that the remaining staff rallied round and supported me and we worked everything out between us, they are still with me and I wont forget what they did, but Im still very wary now and try and move cleaners round if I can so clients dont get attached to them, best of luck dont give up, Lesley.

yea i had a cleaner who decided her best option to get on in life was to offer her services to MY client as an all round groundsperson including cleaning (which at the time was 16 hours per week).

stupidly she told me of her plan, so rather than sacking her on the spot i reminded her of her contract stating she couldn't do that in the first place (i know, i know sometimes not worth the paper its written on) then i asked her about her public liability insurances etc etc. i soon wiped the smile off her face.....the idea went and 2 weeks later i gave her notice to quit. she told me she was planning on leaving in the new year anyway so i simply hurried the process along a little and she left on 17th nov  ;D

i still have my client and another cleaner doing the job :)

Jan,

We all have bad days from time to time for loads of different reasons.Clients and cleaners come and go.
Just keep reminding yourself how hard you've worked to get your business going and keep your chin up.

hi there

when you are a small business, then these knocks are magnified as they have a the potential to upset your business activities.  You have to look at the larger picture, i mean you have to look at either monthly or quarterly periods.

Unfortunately too many of us only look forward in the short term, and fail to see anything in the future, you have to continue looking forward and moving your business in that direction, whilst trying to maintain the present status quo.

there are several factors, why you start your own business, and in no particualr order they include the following

money, financial stability

and

enjoyment

if you get out of bed in the morning, and find yourself working at something that you are happy with, then that has to be a bonus in life. there are far too many people that drudge off to work every day, regretting the day ahead.

People who make that step, to do something about that situation, and take themselves out of the employee tread mill, take a courageous step, and yes it can be difficult.  but the effort in the long term will pay rewards, whether that be in contentement, or financial, whichever makes you happy.

When the business runs smoothly, its far too easy to forget the haarder times, and when they do come back, yes it will hit you, just look it straight in the eye and deal with it.

remember -- you must make commercial decisions, based on your requirements, yes your customers are important, no customers no business.  But if you make rock steady commercial decisions, then you will always retain the good clients.

regards

martin

Chin up chuck!!  It will work out ok in the end.   I have odd times like that when the s**t hits the fan.  I work on my own now because although my business won't ever grow it keeps me in lifes little luxurys.  I have had a so called friend rip me off after i gave her a job cleaning and she took my customers for herself and then proceeded to clean for half the village and she regulaly boasts to neighbours as she lives across the road from me, that she has so much work she could work full time.  Of course she's not PL insured and she doesn't pay tax and also claims benefits.  (couldn't i just drop her in it from a great height!  I am so very tempted)  Good Luck!  You'll get through it and come out smiling.
