Getting old, Doug ;D

Every morning I have to get my fingers working again.  The first joint on each one locks up and I've either got "straight" or "clenched", jumps from one to the other with no control in between.

By the time I've washed my scrim, loaded the van or whatever they're returning to normal.

Try a daily dose of Glucosamine Sulphate 1000mg.  Certainly helps me ;)

Cheers,

Ian

Could it be Carpel Tunnel Syndrome?  This was first suggested to me when I put in a post that my right hand often went numb after prolonged 'poling'.

Since then I've found two of my customers suffering with it, so I guess it's quite common.

Have a look at this link:

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/carpal_tunnel/detail_carpal_tunnel.htm

If it's treated early, you may avoid an operation; so I've been told.

I suffer with it, only since using a pole. Try not to grip the pole so much, and i was told my oesteopath that it was because you are using the same muscles gripping all day. Her advise was to stretch my palms regularly, get the missus to help by putting pressure on either side of your palms giving it a good stretch!! she also minipulated my thumb on a way that it clicked the joint and had no probs for a while. To be honest the £30 was worth it just for that! going back again next week for a loosen up!

Cheers for that Tosh, my fingers get severe pain in the cold so may try the
tip it talks about wearing fingerless gloves. My fingers seem to warm up
after I have taken the gloves off then go back to being cold.

Well looks like old age, wil have to slow down with the misses ;D ;D

  Cheers

Tosh mate , you should have been a doctor , you have a link for every symptom there is !
In all seriousness though , you are obviously a man who knows his stuff when it comes to supplements , if i was to say to you that i was concerned about the stresses that wfp is going to put on my body for lets say the next 20 years , what would you say was my best plan of attack .
Cod liver caps are a winner for a start , and i think it was you a while back who took time out for neck probs , you said about a little warm up before work would help , so thats 2 bases covered , what else if anything should be taken or done to look after ourselves in the line of work ?

Hey , i am quite proud of myself today , i have actually put a rather constructive post on  !    ;D

Google is your friend!

However, I nearly was a doctor!  Honest.  One failed exam stopped me from being one.

My 11+! ;D

Old joke!

When I was cleaning windows traditionally I use to wring out my cloths as I went along to cut down on the amount of cloths I would go through in a day. I developed a large lump on both wrist. Basically every time I wrang my cloths out I was twisting my ligaments and putting too much strain on my tenons. I was told that I would need an operation on both wrists to remove the lumps by my doctor and a SPECIALIST. It's common practice apparently. As I hate the thought of going into hospitals I decided to try every option possible to overcome this work related illness. Basically I stopped wringing out cloths FULL STOP! If the cloth was dirty then I would use a clean one. My washing machine was full every night with scrim. Anyway, after about 6 months my lumps on my wrists both dissapered and I was told I wouldn't need to go into hospital for an operation on my wrists. I was so relieved. Now I will never wring another cloth out in my entire life!
Glucosamine is a supplementary tablet / capsule taken by many athletic, sportspeople and people with very active lives as a supplementary way of maintaining strong cartrilidges and tenons which wear away under heavy use. It is highly recommended for people like ourselves who put our bodies under a great deal of physical abuse. Also cod liver oil containing omega 3 and oily fish is very good for replenishing worn joints!
If your finger/ thumb locks up through prolonged use of WFP it is known as 'trigger finger'. Many arthritic people suffer from this sympton. Some find that by placing their hands in a bowl or bucket of hot water and massaging the joint relieves the stiffness. Another way of relieving this problem is by putting a heat cushion/pad over the joint to ease the mobility of the stiff joint. It is caused by a lack of blood flowing through the veins most of the time because the blood flow is being restricted. Just remember to take a few breaks from time to time and exercise your hands a little more.
Losing a customer is like waiting for the next bus, another one will come along shortly!
