Polypropylene - mix ?
« on: November 22, 2006, 08:44:18 pm »
Is Polypropylene normally mixed with other fibres?

On a visit today I did a burn / float test on a polyproplene carpet  which showed signs of having a wool content.  Yes it did float but not on the top (yes I did soak the fibre first)  and it did bead but smelt of hair.

On research it looks like a 80/20 prop/wool mix.

Is this common?

I intend to use a LMS rotary bonnet system , pre-spay using ph5 then the bonett.

It sound safe to me.

Your thoughts please

Thats an rare one, nearly as odd as the fibre content in my lounge suite post! Well if its bonded you shouldn't worry too much about shrinkage but a concern is browning from the hessian. With the choice of HWE or low moisture rotary i'd probably go with the rotary as you are planning. I know its just confirming what you already know but I hope that this second opinion gives you peace of mind !

Probably 50/50 wool and polyprop. They are pretty common these days.

80/20 mix has been around for years and is the most hard wearing pile mixture on the market for carpets. Mixed with a good pile weight (how many fibres per sq inch) ie 50oz and the carpet could last for years. Never come accross 80% nylon/20% wool - very rare!

Yes - I was only able to do the usual tests and as to its exact percentage content I was not sure about.

Thank you.

Regarding 80% Nylon 20% Wool. There would be no point. On 80/20 Wool / Nylon, the Nylon is added to stop the Wool wearing. Other way round would be pointless, the Wool wouldn't add anything to the carpet.

Understood -  thanks for that John.

What was the likely mix then John?

Or have you just answered that?

Without being there and feeling the floor covering this is an impossible question to answer? Go into carpet shops and learn the different pile mixtures, and get a feeling for them.

There are alot of polyprop carpets now with a very small percentage mix of wool to give it awool look, usually the heavy loop or honeycomb types.
