M/S on leather
« on: November 03, 2006, 07:24:22 am »
anyone tried using microsplitters for leather cleaning?

I tried it on my own suite and a footstool yesterday and it worked better than the foam cleaner I was using.

spray on massage it in with a soft bristle brush, wipe off with a damp towel, dry with dry towel and they protect the normal way.

Using a foam cleaner on leather has been proved to be the safest way to clean as if you use a normal liquid you can get streaks if it is allowed to run and these are in some instances irrepairable.

Foam also cleans from down in the grain pattern if there is one and therfore gives a more efficient clean.

The cleaning that was done down on the Farnham course with m/s which is what is being referred to showed that they do work on leather but Andy was not prepared to accept that as a definitive test, m/s have not been fully road tested for leather whereas others have.

so why not road test m/s on leather if this the only reason you dont reccomend?

I have found lighly misted, worked in with a soft brush, surly this penetrates the grain as well as foam :-\  a once over with a micro fibre cloth , then a good toweling give good results

Hi Guys,

I too have tried MS on leather with good results and I'm sure any surfactant based product , such as MP, Nemesis,Multipro,Ultrapac renovate etc will clean pigmented leather, BUT what will it do the finish ?

It's a bit like using a really high pH on everything , it will clean well but there will be other problems as we well know.

Tread with caution  ;)

Cheers

Doug

p.s. It looks really professional using the foaming bottles .

hi nick i am loving it even though it has been hard work in some way getting here. i still thank you for allowing me to come on a job with you which was a good experience for me. i would recommend anyone starting up to spend a day with someone established
work is now coming in steadily though not flooded out yet  but in a few months i think i will be on the way. decided to stop decorating all together and take a chance doing the cc full time but i wont sell the van just yet.
what i have realised is that more time is spent on promoting than actually cleaning and even though its expensive in time and money
but is the key to building a client base. some areas just do not work such as radio adverts which are  expensive and not the right media for our game.
i have met some good people in this game who have helped me along the way . this business must be unique as the amount of people willing to help others is astounding. i would like to think i need not pick up a paint brush again unless its for my own house

I can only see 2 arguments so for not to use M/S for leather cleaning 1) it will leave streaks on the leather when it runs down & 2) it may harm the finish

1 is easy to solve, be careful and apply it to a cloth rather than directly to the leather.

so we are left with 2 'it may harm the finish'

any comments on this?

the foam cleaner I have is Ph 9-10, M/S are Ph 7-8 so obviously the Ph doesn't effect the finish.

I will add one more argument for not using m/s om leather.

If you have a problem and a claim arises would you still be insured after you tell them you used a product that in theory is not meant for leather?

I use vinegar to clean carpets, it doesn't say on the bottle 'for carpet cleaning' will this also invalidate my insurance ;)

So why are we always being told the best thing for a customer to use on Leather is luke warm water instead of all the conditioning creams etc.

Isn't Microsplitter as safe as water, I use microsplitter all the time for Leather, although I wouldn't touch the more expensive Leathers, however 95% of them out there seem to be cheap "Land of Leather" type suites.

Quite possible it might. We do a lot of insurance work and quite often the policy covering the item is invalided because of products that have been used on it.

Yes many times Mike, used as per your method with a fresh water rinse to finish off with. Then protect.

Customers happy with end results, with no adverse affects to finish to date.

Colin.

What do you use to " protect" the leather after cleaning with ms ?

I have only ever used chemspec leather cleaner and conditioner ( cream), one application, with soft brush and towels. Great results.

thanks

I've been using M/S on leather for years, including my own suite.  It does an excellent job !

I finish with a light covering of conditioner.

You do have to be careful not to get runs, but this is easy to avoid by using a fine mist & doing a section at a time.  would not attempt on analine though !

Why not clean with MS, then apply a conditioner and the put on a finish it's easy enough, apply a protector and walk out a richer person.
