Hi

Someone has offered me a small rotary.

The speed is 230 rpm.

Is this too fast for using with a shampo brush on carpets. As the speed I normally use is a 17" 150 rpm but this is 12" .

What ever you use it on I find that a smaller rotary leaves more swirl marks.

It will be a little fast for some applications related to carpet cleaning.

The speed of the outer bristles of a 17" rotary @ 150rpm is 212.5 fpm, whereas this machine will have an outer bristle speed of 230 fpm.

Consequently, I would not wish to use it in a low-moisture situation such as bonnet buffing or pre-spray agitation, whereas with the lubrication of plenty of shampoo, though not ideal, it should be safe enough.

The other difference with smaller diameter brushes is 'tighter' swirl-marks.

Its a local cleaner that offered me it.

I thought it would be a lighter alternative to my 17" etc  but as you say it could be alittle fast .

I've used a 230rpm machine for H/D carpet scrubbing and bonnet work for about 20 years. Never had a problem. But it's a 400mm/15" and so has a lower circumference speed than a 450/17".  A colleague has an identical machine in the 450/17" size and it's lethal on carpets, actually causing "melt" swirls on polyprop.

I wouldn't have a problem using a 300mm/12" rotary at 230rpm.

PS I don't normally use mine on residential work, just commercial. I would proceed with caution on many types of residential carpet.

Just because its a 12inch machine does'nt mean you can't fit a 17inch drive plate, it just over hangs the machine.

Perhaps I was being over-cautious as I have not used anything as fast for LM.

You are quite correct about fitting a 17" drive plate but this will not fit if a skirt is fitted. So you are going to have a plastic or wooden board spinning at a great set of revs against skirting doors etc... This is my experience with a Numatic, other machines might have a different set up, if so my apologies.

Using an oversize pad/plate will perform a job, but not quite so efficiently. The weight of the machine is an important factor with rotary cleaning, so the pressure on the pad will be reduced in this case.

You weren't being over cautious as your answer agrees with my findings 100% ie.  230rpm and 17" don't go together.
