Microfibre Vs Scrims
« on: October 28, 2006, 08:40:10 am »
I've always used scrims thats what i was taught to use but recently i've heard a lot of microfibre cloths on the threads. What's the difference?

I like microfibre cloths.

You don't need to wear a microfibre in,
They last longer,
They absorb better,
You can colour code them (if you really want to.)
You don't get cloth fibre remnants on the window.
They don't stink as much.
And green is my favourite colour   ;);D

I agree with all that Mark has said, and can also add that they do the job faster than scrim, what will take half a dozen passes with a scrim will only take a couple with microfibre ;)

There good for detailing, absoutly blinding for it they have so much absorbing power.

But.......

For ragging they are complete rubbish compared to a scrim. 100% linen has many many cleaning powers to it, it has the ability to not only hold water but it can actually draw the dirt into the linen, which microfibre simply cannot do. With fibre the dirt sits ontop of the weave therefore making it impossible to rag (scrim) small windows with etc all you are doing is moving the dirt around.

Fair enough if you applicate and squeggee quater lights (small windows) etc then your fibre will out preform a scrim because of there absorbing power which is better than a scrim, but scrim are all rounders and take the dirt right in.

Got to disagree with ProPole on this one, for doing Georgian work, spray and buff method, microfibre out performs scrim by a long way I think.

But yet again, each to his own, I'd never go back to scrim now...but a note of caution where microfibre is concerned...ony use the good ones! And that has to be the ones from the likes of Ettore and Unger, and the flat weave type at that.

Cheapo's form the likes of B & Q or wilko's just don't compare...they're pants by comparison.

But if you haven't tried a microfibre cloth, then buy one and do so! They are only a fiver each for the large ones, give one a whirl and see what you think...

Scrim. Been in this biz for 5 years now and from time to time try out microfibres but just can't get the same reults. Some people can use damp scrims and get the results again I can't.
Carry loads of dry scrim and get the job right first time.

I use both. I started using a couple of Ettore Microfibres in the summer and they are very very good. I keep them for best but its a waste to use them all the time.

I buy unbleached calico and wear it in doing sills. After its had about 5 washes its OK for glass
